Creating a Review-Ready Application

Have you had the experience of submitting your Quality Award application, and then spending the next few months anxiously wondering whether you will receive an award? This session will equip you with the knowledge to identify the maturity of your own application prior to submission. Experienced Quality Award Examiners will cover the review process from beginning to end, demonstrating HOW an Examiner evaluates your application. Applicants can use the knowledge gained through this session to “review” their own application and develop improvements based on those insights.

Tim Case

Administrator, AHCA/NCAL National Quality Award Program

Tim Case was the principal developer of the AHCA/NCAL National Quality Award Program in 1993. For the past 22 years Tim has been the Administrator of the program, which has grown to be not only the premier award for organizational quality in long term care, but also the largest Baldrige-based program in the country.

Tim has served on the faculty of the Virginia Tech College of Education, as the Deputy Director of the Quality Care Health Foundation, as AHCA’s Senior Advisor for Quality and as a Health Care Policy Analyst for the U.S Senate.

Tim holds graduate degrees from Virginia Tech and from Michigan State University.

Zach Ziesemer

Executive Director
Markesan Resident Home

Zach Ziesemer is an Executive Director who leads the team at Willowdale Nursing & Rehab to achieve its experienced clinical and operational success.

From his hands on and genuine involvement with center staff and residents Zach knows that you’re only as good as the effort and dedication you put in.

Over the years the Zach has assisted the center in achieving state surveys with less than half the state average citations. In 2015 he assisted the center in earning the Silver AHCA Quality Award.

Zach is a licensed nursing home administrator and certified nursing assistant.

Zach holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration from UW Eau Claire.

Edward J. Ebling

Director of Operations
Fortis Management Group

Born in Northeast Ohio, Edward Ebling began his career in skilled nursing as a CNA right out of high school. After receiving his BA in psychology from Hiram College he went on to receive his Juris Doctor from The University of Akron School of Law. While studying healthcare law and completing his clerkship at a local hospital he found his calling in healthcare management. Edward then enrolled in The University of Kansas School of Medicine where he received his Master's in Healthcare Administration. After graduation he realized that his background was a perfect recipe for skilling nursing administration so he completed his AIT with Kindred Healthcare in 2006 and in 2008 relocated to the Pacific Northwest to run Sequim Health and Rehabilitation. Edward was recently promoted to Director of Operations for Fortis Management Group who assumed US operations for what was previously Extendicare. As an Executive Director, Edward was awarded facility of the year twice by his corporation, achieved a deficiency free annual survey, was awarded both Bronze and Silver AHCA National Quality Awards, and has been a Senior Examiner for AHCA grading Silver awards for the last 3 years. Edward's wife Kate of 6 years is a Certified Critical Care Registered Nurse and they have two children, Will who is nearly 6 and Lily who turns 3 this month.

Pete Zeigler

Director of SNF Education and Compliance
Rocky Mountain Care

Pete Zeigler, MBA, LNHA, is currently the Administrator at the George E. Wahlen Ogden Veterans Home in Ogden, Utah, a Avalon Health Care Group community. Pete Zeigler has worked as a long-term care administrator for nine years in Washington and Utah. He currenlty serves on the Board of Directors for the Utah Health Care Association for six years. He also currently serves on Advisory Boards at Weber State University, Intermountain Healthcare, and the Utah Department of Heatlh. He is currently a senior examiner for the AHCA/NCAL National Quality Award Program. Pete is the Administrator of a community that recently recieved the AHCA Silver Quality Award. Pete has an MBA from Weber State University and has recieved Executive Education in Healthcare Leadership from the University of Utah. Pete and his wife Ashli have been married for twelve years. They have three children.

Geoffrey S. Calhoun

Geoffrey (Jeff) Calhoun is President and Founder of Calhoun Consulting Partners, LLC. Over the past 25 years, Jeff Calhoun has developed an extensive background in leadership, business management, and strategic thinking. With over two decades of direct management experience in business operations, including full balance sheet and profit and loss responsibility, Jeff has the proven ability to grow revenues, address expense issues and lead an organization. His ownership of the strategic planning and performance measurement processes for a manufacturing company with 30 locations provided invaluable experience in balancing the needs of customers, employees and stakeholders. Jeff led the development and implementation of an integrated management system that resulted in “same store” incremental sales and EBIT both exceeding industry averages by over 40% over a five-year period.

Most recently, Jeff was Director- Business Excellence for Baxter International, a $14 billion global company. In that role, he was a LEAN/Six Sigma Master Black Belt and led an international team of 15 experts that conducted organizational assessments, identified opportunities for improvement, and coached or led projects to address these needs with appropriate DMAIC improvement techniques. These projects resulted in $8-15 million in annual savings. He also led the development and implementation of a global complaint handling system.

Jeff is a nationally recognized expert in the use of the Baldrige Criteria for Performance Excellence after 20 years as a Lead Senior Examiner and Judge at the national and state levels. He is currently on the Panel of Judges for the AHCA/NCAL National Quality Award process. Jeff had previously been a member of the Panel of Judges for the Illinois Performance Excellence Award and Governor’s Sterling (Florida) Award processes. As a Lead Senior Examiner in various programs, Jeff has led 20 Baldrige-based site visits..

Jeff co-authored a whitepaper, The Foundations of Leadership in Baldrige Winning Organizations, for the National Center for Healthcare Leadership that was published in Modern Health magazine.

In 2010, Jeff was recognized with the Excellence in Leadership Award by Illinois Performance Excellence, formerly known as the Lincoln Foundation for Performance Excellence, an honor presented to individuals who serve as role models and leaders not only in their organizations but also in their industry.

Jeff holds a BA degree from Dartmouth College in Hanover, NH.
