The Silver Quality Award: How To, Tools and Resources

The Silver Quality Award criteria is a significant step in the Quality Award journey, requiring organizations to not only have strong systems and positive outcomes, but also a solid grasp of the criteria and scoring system. In order to effectively apply the demands of the criteria, organizations must first understand them. This mega session will provide an overview of the demands of the Silver Criteria and scoring system, and demonstrate how an organization would respond effectively to the criteria. Insights from experienced Quality Award Examiners make this session a must for any organization considering a 2018 application at the Silver Award.

Paul Grizzell of Core Values Partners is an international speaker, trainer, and leadership coach who helps his partners focus, align, and accelerate their improvement efforts through effective deployment of the Baldrige Criteria for Performance Excellence. Much of his work is focused on helping mission-focused organizations use the Baldrige Criteria to improve processes - all with an eye toward improving outcomes. He has assisted long-term care organizations with developing and refining their AHCA/NCAL Award applications, preparing for site visits, and better understanding performance excellence concepts. His core competencies are engaging leaders to commit to excellence and coaching all levels of the organization in making progress on a performance excellence journey.

Paul has been a Judge for the Gold Level of the American Health Care Association Quality Award for five years and trains Senior Examiners for the Quality Award program. He has been involved with Baldrige-based performance improvement since 1997. Paul is an Alumni Examiner on the Baldrige Award Board of Examiners where has led multiple site visits and trains Baldrige Examiners. He is also a Judge for the Minnesota, Illinois, and Virginia Performance Excellence Awards and. He is an Assessor and Licensed Advisor for the European Quality Award and the Foreign Evaluation Expert with the China Quality Award.

Paul is a co-author of Insights To Performance Excellence 2017–2018; Using the Baldrige Framework and Other Integrated Management Systems, published by the American Society for Quality.

Paul lives in Woodbury, Minnesota. He is currently driving his family nuts by trying to implement a self-administered “Baldrige in the Home” initiative. In spite of this, he has been married to Janice for 32 years.

Renee Ridling

Renee Ridling, M.S., L.N.H.A.

Renee’s passion is the long term care industry and improving quality outcomes for residents. She is currently the Executive Director at Life Care Center of Waynesville, Missouri and has been working in long-term care since 1992. Renee has served as both an AHCA/NCAL National Quality Award Senior and Master Examiner since 2010. Renee and her previous facility achieved AHCA’s highest level of recognition by receiving the Gold-Excellence in Quality Award in 2014. Her current facility earned a Bronze-Committment to Quality Award in 2016 and a Silver-Achievement in Quality Award in 2017. She has successfully coached Bronze and Silver quality award applicants through the application process. Renee is a licensed nursing home administrator (LNHA) in Missouri and holds a Master’s of Science in Health Care Administration. She serves on the Education Committee for Missouri Health Care Association and as a MHCA district officer. She has been a frequent speaker for various workshops and seminars, including sessions related to the AHCA/NCAL Quality Award Program.

DeAnn Walters

Director of Clinical Affairs and Quality Improvement

DeAnn Walters has been a Licensed Nursing Home Administrator since 1999. As an administrator Ms. Walters has worked in multiple care settings, from strictly Alzheimer's care to multi-faceted 232 bed center with units for rehabilitation, long-term and Alzheimer's care. Ms. Walters has worked with CMS in the BPCI (bundling) from 2012-2106. DeAnn has led facilities to achieve and maintain 5-Star CMS ratings and a preferred partner status at the primary Medicare hospital bundling program managed by NaviHealth. As an administrator Ms. Walters's has led 3 facilites through bronze and silver quality awards and has been Senior Examiner in the AHCA/NCAL Quality Award Program for 8 years. Currently, Ms. Walters has transitioned to supporting the 1300 member facilities of California as the Director of Clinical Affairs and Quality Improvement.
