The full Baldrige criteria is complex and requires a significant commitment, but also generates significant returns. Gold recipient organizations out-perform their peers on almost every quality metric. Leaders of Gold organizations will tell you that the key to their success is through the application of the Baldrige criteria. This session will provide an in depth look at the requirements of the Baldrige criteria, criteria, the changes in the 2017/2018 Criteria, an explanation of the scoring system, and insights from a former Gold Quality Award and National Baldrige recipient, and member of the Quality Award Panel of Judges.

Gary Floss, Adjunct Professor, University of St. Thomas, St. Paul, MN
Gary Floss served as the Director of Quality Assurance and Continual Improvement for Marvin Windows and Doors for 10 years recently retiring . Gary previously served as the Managing Director of BlueFire Partners, a consulting firm specializing in providing services to organizations to improve enterprise-wide business excellence. Gary has extensive quality leadership and operational management experience in high-tech global industry Fortune 500 companies having served as VP, Corporate Quality at Medtronic, Inc. and Ceridian, Inc. (formerly Control Data Corporation). Gary is a 19-year member of the adjunct faculty for the University of St. Thomas teaching a graduate course called Strategic Quality Management. He is a 27-year member of the Malcolm Baldrige Board of Examiners having also served as a Baldrige Judge for three of these years. He has conducted numerous Baldrige site visits and delivered more than 70 presentations regarding the Baldrige criteria. Gary was a principal designer in establishing the Minnesota State Quality Award in 1991 and served on the MCQ Board of Directors and has recently completed his 4th three-year term as a judge in this process Gary has served as a judge for the Baldrige-based Army Communities of Excellence Program and currently serves as a judge and trainer for the American Health Care Association Baldrige-based Program. Gary has coaching and assessment experience in applying the Baldrige model to all sectors: manufacturing, service, healthcare, education, and non-profit organizations. Gary serves on the Board of GOAL/QPC (a training and consulting organization.)
Gary holds a BS in Electrical Engineering from the University of Kansas and has done post-graduate work at the University of Minnesota.

Maryruth Butler

Executive Director
Kindred Nursing and Rehabilitation Mountain Valley

Maryruth’s healthcare passion has led her to be the Executive Director at Kindred Nursing and Rehabilitation – Mountain Valley in her hometown of Kellogg, Idaho since 2001. Mountain Valley, a 68-bed Skilled Nursing Facility, is the 2016 recipient of the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award.
She attributes using the Baldrige Excellence Framework for shifting her professional approach and creating a culture of performance excellence. Mountain Valley’s quality journey began when applying for the American Health Care Association’s three-tiered Quality Awards. The facility was awarded the Bronze Award in 2005, the Silver Award in 2007, and the Gold Award in 2011. Maryruth learned to sustain these outcomes and guides her workforce to continuously improve, encourages innovation, and is dedicated to providing the highest quality care for patients and residents.
Inspired by the AHCA Quality Award process, she became a Senior Examiner in 2012 and served as a Master Examiner in 2013, 2014, and 2015, participating in one site visit. Her continuous improvement is evidenced by being awarded Kindred’s 2015 Northwest District Executive Director of the Year and in 2016 the facility received a zero deficiency state survey.
Maryruth holds her Master of Business Administration in Health Care Administration from Jones International University and her Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Lewis-Clark State College.
