Matthew J. Allen, VetMB, PhD, MRCVS

Professor of Small Animal Surgery
University of Cambridge

Matthew J. Allen, VetMB, PhD, MRCVS: After initial veterinary training at the University of Cambridge, I pursued a PhD (Cambridge) and then a post-doctoral fellowship (Purdue) in comparative orthopaedics. This research training allowed me to develop particular expertise in the development and optimization of preclinical animal models for orthopedic conditions. I moved to SUNY Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, where I held joint appointments in the Departments of Orthopedic Surgery, Neuroscience & Physiology, and Laboratory Animal Resources. During my 12 years at Syracuse, I mentored a number of graduate students and orthopedic residents pursuing thesis research. I was recruited to The Ohio State University in March 2008 and directed the Surgical Research Laboratory at the OSU College of Veterinary Medicine. Over my time at OSU, I served as the research mentor for 2 PhD students, 9 veterinary surgical residents and 6 surgical Fellows. I also established a clinical total knee replacement program in the Veterinary Medical Centre. In 2014, I was elected Professor of Small Animal Surgery at the University of Cambridge. My current research, performed in the newly established Surgical Discovery Centre, involves a mixture of preclinical and clinical research in the areas of total joint replacement, spine surgery, image-guided surgery and surgical oncology.
