Associate Professor, Clinical Equine Emergency Surgery/Critical Care

Dr. Julie E. Dechant, DVM, MS, DACVS, DACVECC graduated from the Western College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Saskatchewan in 1996. After completing a private practice internship in her home province of Alberta, she moved to Fort Collins, Colorado to complete a Combined Masters and Clinical Residency in Large Animal Surgery at Colorado State University from 1997 to 2000. After her residency, Dr. Dechant joined the Large Animal Surgery faculty at the University of Saskatchewan for a 1-year position as a Clinical Associate. From 2001 to 2004, she was a Visiting Assistant Professor at Oklahoma State University where she was an Equine Emergency Clinician. In 2004, Dr. Dechant was offered an emergency surgery position at University of California-Davis, initially in a Lecturer position and is currently an Associate Professor in Clinical Equine Emergency Surgery and Critical Care. She is board-certified in 2 specialties: American College of Veterinary Surgeons (Diplomate ACVS) and American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care (Diplomate ACVECC). Dr. Dechant was honored to receive Faculty Distinguished Teaching Awards from the School of Veterinary Medicine (2015) and UC Davis (2016). Her research interests are related to improving the diagnosis and care of large animal emergency and critical care patients. She also has a secondary interest in camelid medicine and associated research.

Stephanie Hibbits, DVM, DACVS is a 2001 graduate of UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine, after which she pursued a career in equine surgery through an internship at Arizona Equine Medical & Surgical Centre, a large animal surgery fellowship at Oregon State University College of Veterinary Medicine, and an equine surgical residency at Peterson & Smith Equine Hospital in Ocala, Florida. She is currently an associate surgeon at Steinbeck Country Equine Clinic in Salinas, California.

Shannon Kelly Reed, DVM, MS, DACVS-LA is an associate teaching professor at the University of Missouri Veterinary Health Center. Her primary duties are clinical instruction of students rotating through the hospital while providing needed client and patient services in lameness and general surgery for the large animal species seen in the clinic.
