VALS Laparoscopic Suturing Training Course

Wednesday, October 11
8:00 AM - 5:00 PM
Location: Room 201

Sponsored by

Fees: $750 early / $800 late
Open to ACVS and ECVS Diplomates and residents

This laparoscopic suturing course is open for ACVS/ECVS Diplomates and residents interested in clinical application of laparoscopic suturing. It is designed as hands-on training and preparation for the Veterinary Assessment of Laparoscopic Skills (VALS) program (visit valsprogram.org for information).

The course consists of a 45-minute lecture reviewing laparoscopic suturing and knot tying techniques. The participants are divided into two groups, A and B in which they alternate performing training blocks consisting of two 45-minute hands-on laparoscopic suturing simulation training sessions, under supervision by two experienced laparoscopic surgeons (Drs. Boel Fransson and Lynetta Freeman). The block of sessions are interrupted with 2 hour breaks for rest, which aids to internalize the training. The groups perform 2 blocks of training sessions each (i.e. four 45-minute hands-on training sessions total) with time for rests alternating between groups. Thus, when group A rests, group B performs a training block and vice versa.

The sessions cover intracorporeal knot tying techniques, extracorporeal knot tying and suturing techniques. In addition, different needle introductions, cannula placement, and needle correction techniques will be practiced. Basic laparoscopic psychomotor skills (peg transfer, pattern cutting) are a pre-requisite for successful participation in this course.

VALS registered participants can elect to make an appointment to take the certifying VALS test on site (visit valsprogram.org for information). Additional fees apply and few appointments are available on a first come-first serve policy. Please note that a passing score needs to be met, mere participation in the test does not guarantee a VALS certificate. The VALS certificate is valid for 5 years.

To make an appointment for the certifying VALS test, please contact Dr. Boel Fransson at bfransso@vetmed.wsu.edu.

Boel A. Fransson, DVM, PhD, DACVS, ACVS Founding Fellow, Minimally Invasive Surgery

Associate Professor Small Animal Surgery
Washington State University

Dr. Boel Fransson, DVM, PhD, DACVS has been practicing small animal minimally invasive surgery (MIS) at Washington State University since 2006. Since then the WSU-MIS research group has developed the country's first laparoscopic simulation laboratory available to veterinary surgeons. The veterinary assessment of laparoscopic skills (VALS), a training program and a certifying skills test, was developed based on this body of research. Boel's clinical interests include laparoscopic suturing, chylothorax treatment, and gasless laparoscopy in addition to all sorts of MIS procedures. Dr. Franssson is past president of the Veterinary Endoscopy Society (2011-2013) and the Society of Veterinary Soft Tissue Surgeons (2013-2015). She was recently accepted as ACVS Founding Fellow in Minimally Invasive Surgery.
