SPI 2017

Optimizing DER's with Intelligent Energy Storage Solutions.

Tuesday, September 12
3:00 PM - 4:00 PM
Location: Storage Central: Booth 1235

Part 1: Economically Optimal Control of DERs, and

Part 2: Marcus Garvey Village: Successful Application of Intelligent DER Control

This presentation will explain how advanced intelligent control techniques can achieve real-time economic optimization of energy-storage-enabled DERs. Examples will be given of optimal control of behind the meter (BTM) systems with complex sets of value streams. Lastly, field experience with optimal control of a DER installed at Marcus Garvey Village will be presented highlighting the challenges and successes of that award-winning New York DER project.

Mike Fife

Chief Technology Officer
Demand Energy Networks

Mike leads the technology team at Demand Energy Networks (DEN), a turn-key developer of energy storage systems that was recently acquired by Enel Green Power, a global utility with 36 GW of installed renewable capacity. Mike’s team develops control algorithms, numerical simulations, and software analytics for a wide variety energy applications. Prior to joining Demand Energy in 2014, Mike was an Engineering Director at PV Powered (acquired by Advanced Energy in 2010). Under his leadership, PV Powered designed commercial inverters with the highest levels of reliability and efficiency in the industry. Prior to working in the solar industry, Mike was a managing engineer at Exponent. He began his career at the Air Force Research Laboratory Electric Propulsion Group and NASA, where he oversaw the design, development, and qualification of mission-critical propulsion systems for Air Force satellites and developed key components of flight control systems for the first generation of fly-by-wire high performance fighter aircraft. Mike is a licensed Professional Engineer and holds a Ph.D. in Aeronautics and Astronautics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Mike has authored over 40 peer-reviewed technical papers and articles and holds several U.S. patents in the area of renewable energy.
