Nicholas Tumilowicz

Principal Manager
Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI)

Nick Tumilowicz is Principal Manager for DER to Grid Integration with the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), deploying distributed energy technologies into practical, real-world contexts. By identifying and executing demonstration projects across the international community, he addresses the utility challenges of high-penetration renewables and advises on technical solutions to validate value streams and inform industry standards.

Prior to joining EPRI, Tumilowicz drove global research and development efforts as Director of Distributed Energy Storage with SunEdison, managing international market and technology evaluation of battery storage and designing go-to-market strategies to deploy products and services in Asia, Europe, and North America. He also developed a fleet data analytics and asset management platform to support the growth of SunEdison’s portfolio from a 100MW domestic base to over 4GW globally distributed.

In his early career, Tumilowicz was responsible for spacecraft hardware testing for NASA at the Department of Defense’s Naval Research Laboratory and was instrumental in laying the groundwork for a national portfolio of product offerings and service operations at REC Solar (now Sunrun and Duke Energy).

Tumilowicz studied mechanical engineering at Marquette University, with a focus on energy systems and materials science, and competed in the international solar boat racing circuit with the Solar Energy Society.

Daniel Crotzer

Fractal Energy Storage Consultants

Daniel Crotzer is the President of Fractal, a firm that specializes in energy storage and renewable energy consulting. Fractal provides expert evaluation, technical design and financial analysis of energy storage and renewable energy projects. Fractal’s experience includes hands-on operation and management of 77 MW battery storage as well as consultant services that include technical design and financial analysis of: 678 MW battery storage, 402 MW mechanical storage and 662 MW of solar and wind.

Daniel is a nuclear engineer and MBA who specializes in using predictive analytics to create market advantages. Formerly, Daniel was the Operations Center Manager at Xtreme Power. He directed the operation of 77 MW of energy storage and energy management systems across the world. While at Xtreme Power, he led the creation of the first power trading platform using battery energy storage. Prior to Xtreme Power, Daniel completed his MBA from the University of Texas at Austin. He was a Surface Nuclear Propulsion Officer for the US Navy onboard the USS George Washington (CVN-73) and the USS Samuel B Roberts (FFG-58). Daniel also has a B.S. in Civil Engineering from the UT Austin.

Hailing from the distributed computing, data analytics and software space – John firmly believed that intelligent energy storage could become the first programmable, multi-application appliance available to all grid operators, integrated with a variety of power assets. With that vision and now an industry-leading software and integration platform called GEMS, Greensmith is enabling a growing number of the largest power companies and partners across the world looking to define the future of grid management.

Prior to Greensmith, John held C-level roles at a number of venture-backed technology companies operating in North America, Europe and Asia, including a software and solutions startup that served 21 of the 25 largest electric utilities in North America. John also served as a strategy practice leader for A.T. Kearney and Braxton Associates and holds an MBA from the Richard Ivey School of Business. He currently resides in the Bay Area.
