More importantly, they provide an additional layer of reliability and resiliency by using local resources to keep the power on when the grid goes down. Peter Muhoro

Vice President, Strategic Industry Research and Analysis
National Rural Utilities Cooperative Finance Corporation

Dr. Peter Muhoro is the Chief Strategy Officer at Pedernales Electric Cooperative, the largest electric distribution cooperative in the U.S. Peter brings technical knowledge and strategic planning expertise to the cooperative and is responsible for the development, implementation and monitoring of the overall vision, mission, short and long term strategic initiatives for the cooperative, as directed by the Board of Directors. He evaluates and shapes the cooperative strategy with respect to advanced research, energy policy, business intelligence and technology.

Prior to PEC, Peter served as an Advisor at the Cooperative Research Network, the technology research arm of the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association. He previously launched several small businesses focused on bottom of the pyramid issues and poverty reduction through electricity access. He is a sought after speaker both on the national and international arena.

Peter holds a Ph.D. in Applied Physics from the University of Michigan with a focus on energy.

Todd Hiemer

Executive Vice President of Engineering
Central Electric Cooperative

Todd brings 27 years of engineering expertise, with nearly half of those years being spent in the power industry. He is responsible for designing and planning the electric utility systems at Central Electric Cooperative, as well as the development of research, reports and studies. Todd was instrumental in designing and developing the innovation district microgrid at Central's headquarters campus in Stillwater, OK. This microgrid includes solar, battery storage, ground source loop, backup generation and self healing grid techniques for the campus. Hiemer earned his Bachelors as well as his Masters in Electrical Engineering from Oklahoma State. Todd earned his Masters in Business Administration at Oklahoma City University. Hiemer is a registered professional engineer and holds two patents. He recently served as the IEEE Region 5 Chapter Representative for the Power Engineering Society, Program Evaluator for the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology, and is President of Oklahoma Future City Competition Foundation. Hiemer is a 1st Lieutenant in Civil Air Patrol Edmond Squadron. Todd enjoys officiating basketball and has his commercial pilot’s license. His favorite quote comes from Thomas Edison: “I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.”

Kate Sherwood

Senior Director, Grid Modernization

Kate Sherwood is the senior director of grid modernization at 3M. Ms. Sherwood was previously in the storage and solar industries, where she held leadership roles with Advanced Microgrid Solutions, SolarCity, Recurrent Energy, and SunPower. Prior to solar, she held roles in finance, marketing, and strategy consulting with the U.S. Department of Justice, Sun Microsystems, and Accenture. Ms. Sherwood holds a MBA from The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania and a BS cum laude from George Mason University.

Howard Smith

Mgr., DER Policy
Southern Company Services

Howard Smith graduated Clemson University in 1977 with a BS degree in Electrical Engineering.

Howard is the Manager of DER Policy and is responsible for tracking current / future trends and activities involving the broad aspects of DER. Also, he is responsible for developing plans and policy positions related to DER in support of Executive Management’s efforts in the establishment of goals, actions and policies for the Southern system.

Howard is on the Advisory Council for SEPA, and was formerly the Chairman of the Board of Directors for ADS. He served on the Alabama Governor’s Advisory Team for Industrial Energy Efficient and CHP. He has made numerous regional and national presentations on integrated resource planning, DSM, smart grid, storage and other electric industry related topics.

Duke Power

Howard worked as a Quality Assurance/Special Project engineer in distribution. He worked in Duke Power's corporate office as a distribution staff engineer responsible for distribution design and equipment standards, outdoor lighting, and special projects.

Georgia Power

Howard held various jobs within Transmission, Generation, Regulatory, Bulk Power and Market Planning. He became responsible for developing the Integrated Resource Plan (IRP). Howard became the Metro Team Manager for Key Accounts in the Sales Organization and later became the Manager of Technical Sales. His team was responsible for promoting electric end use processes for non-electrical customer processes including Customer Cogeneration Opportunities.

Alabama Power

Howard became the Manager of Resource Planning and Demand Response Operations. He was responsible for the development of the generation supply-side and demand-response plan to meet the future needs of Alabama Power. This responsibility included seeking cost effective resources such as: combined heat and power generation, renewable resources (wind, solar, biomass, etc.), traditional generation and customer energy efficiency and demand controlled resources.
