This session will investigate the software-driven nature of energy storage and the resulting procurement options, subscriptions, hardware vs service, risk mitigation, bankability, and warranties of this technology.

Michael Mendelsohn

Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA)

As Senior Director of Project Finance and Capital Markets, Mike is tasked with opening financing opportunities and innovations for the solar asset class. Mike will be leading SEIA’s outreach to the banking, rating agency, capital markets, real estate and other stakeholders communities to facilitate new market and investment mechanisms.
Mike has 25 years of experience in the energy industry. Prior to joining SEIA, Mike worked for NREL where he led the Solar Access to Public Capital working group. He also held economist and analysis positions with the Massachusetts Department of Public Utilities, Levitan and Associates, and Western Resource Advocates. Mike holds a BA from Ithaca College in Computer Science and a MS from University of Pennsylvania in Energy Management and Policy.

Doug Akerson

Doug Akerson is VP Energy Products with The Hartford Steam Boiler Inspection and Insurance Company (HSB) responsible for developing and originating structured insurance products for energy & infrastructure clients.

Doug is a risk management professional with an exceptional record as a client manager, originator, underwriter, and placement broker. He has extensive experience in the power generation, oil & gas, petrochemical and renewable energy industries.

During Doug’s career he has and continues to work with leading energy companies, investors and project developers in identifying and managing external/internal business and operating risks.

Mr. Akerson earned his Master degrees in Environmental Engineering and Technology Management from The Johns Hopkins University and Stevens Institute of Technology and Bachelor degree in Finance from Rider College.

Carl Mansfield

Sharp Electronics Corporation - Energy Systems and Services Group (ESSG)

Carl Mansfield is General Manager and Founder of Sharp Electronics Corporation’s Energy Systems and Services Group (ESSG), which focuses on developing innovative energy management and energy storage products for the U.S. market. Mr. Mansfield is the driving force behind the development and business roll-out of Sharp’s energy management product, SmartStorage®, and has served as General Manager of ESSG since its formation in the spring of 2014.

Mr. Mansfield has more than 20 years of experience in the high tech industry, with an emphasis on communications, information technology and control systems. Prior to founding ESSG, Mr. Mansfield spent eight years developing new business opportunities for Sharp, leveraging innovative technologies and business models to create new products and services. He joined Sharp in 1998 as Manager, Sharp Laboratories of America. In 2004, he was named Senior Manager of Home Networking Technologies, where he successfully led development of system and intellectual property for a powerline carrier communications system, and oversaw the successful license and royalty agreements for several patents. He has also served as Sharp’s representative on the Board of Directors for HomePlug and WiMedia.

He holds a Master of Science in Telecomms Engineering degree from the University of London and an MA in Physics and Theoretical Physics from the University of Cambridge. He is a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).

Fred Vaske

FRED VASKE joined EnSync Energy Systems in December 2015 as the Vice President, Structured Finance where he brings over 25 years of experience in project and asset finance, valuation and consulting. He has held senior finance positions in the solar industry for the last 10 years, and led the closing of over $2.5 billion in debt and equity transactions in the utility and commercial solar photovoltaic industries. Prior to joining EnSync Energy, Fred served as Vice President of project finance for Recurrent Energy, Hanwha Q CELLS USA and Scatec Solar USA. In all organizations he established and built strongly capable project finance teams that led financing efforts in the U.S., Canada, Mexico, Germany, Spain and Japan. Fred also served as Director, Structured Finance for SunPower where he negotiated solar Power Purchase Agreements with commercial customers, and led the company’s first financings of those contracts.

Prior to entering the solar industry in 2007, he spent over a decade in the big-ticket asset finance industry, including seven years with GATX Capital where he was Vice President, Structured Finance and led the financing of portfolios of aircraft, railroad rolling stock, and technology assets.

Fred holds an MA in Economics from Washington University in St. Louis and a BA in Mathematics and Economics from Claremont McKenna College.

J.W. has been a co-founder and driving force behind multiple early innovative companies in the renewable industry. He was the co-founder of Main Street Power, a pioneer in the distributed generation power purchase agreement space and an innovator in clean energy finance, driving the first New Market and Investment Tax Credit portfolio. J.W. has also served as an executive, Chief Development Officer, and Chief Operating Officer with Milender White Construction, SunShare, and Clean Energy Collective.

Prior to his work in solar, J.W. had a successful early career for 13 years in the Investment Management Business with A.G. Edwards and his own fiduciary investment advisory firm. He is a graduate of the University of Colorado and has a Master in Public Policy from Georgetown University. He married to his college sweetheart Jennifer and they have three amazing kids Carly (19), Jackson (15), and Calvin (12). J.W. has been active in Colorado politics, non-profits and community work. He currently serves on the board of the Solar Electric Light Fund (www.SELF.org) In his spare time, he enjoys fly fishing, cycling, fiction writing, and youth baseball.
