Paula Olszewski-Kubilius

Director, Center for Talent Development
Northwestern University

Dr. Paula Olszewski-Kubilius is currently the director of the Center for Talent Development at Northwestern University and a professor in the School of Education and Social Policy. Over the past 33 years, she has created programs for all kinds of gifted learners and written extensively on issues of talent development, particularly on programming for under-represented gifted students. Her most recent work is a monograph written with Rena Subotnik and Frank Worrell, “Rethinking Giftedness and Gifted Education: A Proposed Direction Forward Based on Psychological Science”, published by the Association for Psychological Science. She has served as editor of Gifted Child Quarterly, co-editor of the Journal of Secondary Gifted Education and on the editorial review boards of Gifted and Talented International, The Roeper Review, and Gifted Child Today. She is currently vice-chair of the board of trustees of the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy and a member of the board of directors of the Illinois Association for the Gifted. She also serves on that advisory boards for the Center for Gifted Education at the College of William and Mary and the Robinson Center for Young Scholars at the University of Washington. She is the immediate past president of the National Association for Gifted Children from whom she received the Early Scholar Award in 1987, the Distinguished Scholar Award in 2009, and the GCQ Paper of the Year Award in 2011.

Michael S. Matthews

University of North Carolina at Charlotte

Dr. Michael S. Matthews is associate professor and Director of the Academically & Intellectually Gifted graduate programs at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. He is co-editor of Gifted Child Quarterly, and also has served on the Board of Directors of the National Association for Gifted Children. Dr. Matthews also is Chair of the Special Interest Group—Research on Giftedness, Creativity, and Talent of the American Educational Research Association. His professional interests in advanced academics and gifted education include research methods; policy; science learning; motivation and underachievement; parenting; and issues in the education of gifted and academically advanced learners from diverse backgrounds, specifically those who are English language learners. Dr. Matthews is the author or editor of five books, over 40 peer reviewed journal articles, and numerous book chapters in gifted education. His work has been recognized with the Early Scholar Award (2010) from the National Association for Gifted Children, and the Michael Pyryt Collaboration Award from the AERA SIG—Research on Giftedness, Creativity, and Talent (2012).

April Wells

Gifted Specialist
Illinois School District U-46

April Wells’ professional orientation has focused on gifted children from the beginning of her career with Illinois School District U-46. Currently serving as the Gifted Specialist, where she is accountable for the administration of the district’s School Within a School (SWAS) continuum of services. April has presented for the Illinois Association for Gifted Children on a variety of pertinent topics, such as identification protocol for underserved populations, essential questions as a catalyst for critical thinking, and the unique social emotional needs of the minority gifted child. April excels at providing equitable access for underrepresented students to district programming. April strives to promote an awareness of, and sensitivity toward the unique social and emotional needs of gifted children while providing platforms for them to maximize their potential.
