Successful, sustained advocacy is crucial as we navigate the national gifted education landscape to ensure our programs are both maintained and strengthened. Learn more about the importance of advocacy to drive positive policy change, defining success, cultivating champions & leaders, and real world, research based, advocacy tools and strategies that work. This session will provide practical tips and examples of successful advocacy strategies at the state and local level. While every community is different, there are key lessons to be learned regardless of context.

Ann Sheldon

Ohio Association for Gifted Children

Ann Sheldon is the Executive Director of the Ohio Association for Gifted Children (OAGC). She has worked at the student, district, state and national levels for over twenty years to promote the needs of gifted students. Due to the advocacy efforts of OAGC, the state of Ohio has recently made many positive revisions to Ohio’s gifted operating standards. These include, among other changes, required universal screening and gifted professional development for classroom teachers providing services to gifted children.

Carolyn Welch

Policy & Advocacy Co-Chair
Illinois Association for Gifted Children

Carolyn E. Welch is an education lawyer who represents students with various needs and abilities, their families, and the schools they attend, including special needs students and schools in underserved communities. As an advocate for gifted children, she serves as Co-Chair of Policy and Advocacy for the Illinois Association for Gifted Children, Chairman of the Midwest Center for the Gifted, and as a member of the Legislative and Advocacy Committee for the National Association for Gifted Children. Her commitment to advocacy stems in part from her experience as a parent of two gifted children who have suffered from funding cuts to their public school gifted programming and benefitted from whole-grade and radical content acceleration. She is also a member of the Board of Directors and an Officer of pilotED Schools, an identity-based school in Indianapolis. Carolyn received her J.D. from the Georgetown University Law Center.
