Sparking Higher Order Thinking in At-Risk Gifted in Early Elementary

When is the best time to find the hidden gifted? As early as possible! From 2015-17, a collaborative research team developed and taught district-wide K-2 whole class enrichment lessons to identify students using higher-order thinking strengths overlooked by traditional measures. In this hands-on workshop, explore three open-ended, active lessons that ignite all students’ curiosity and help teachers facilitate critical and creative thinking in high potential, at-risk students. We share challenges, successes, surprises, insights, and samples of student work. You will leave with ready-to-use lesson plans and practical ideas for your classroom, school, or district.

Cori Paulet

Program Manager, Educational Researcher
University of St. Thomas

Cori Paulet has an M.A. in Gifted, Creative and Talented Education from the University of St. Thomas, MN. She is an educational researcher and project manager for two Javits grants: the UST/Mankato MN Gifted Ed Collaborative and Project North Star with the Minnesota Department of Education. She was the curriculum designer and lead instructor on a personal narrative writing grant, in collaboration with ThreeSixty Journalism, providing at-risk, urban high school students the knowledge, skills and practice for writing personal essays for college/career. With experience producing educational television and multimedia for PBS, she is very interested in the creative possibilities of intermingling digital media, games, technology and education.

Carol Malueg

Research Project Manager
University of St. Thomas

Carol Malueg is the mother of 2 gifted girls, a professional in the field of gifted education, and an active member of several state and national organizations that support gifted kids and their families. Carol currently serves as President on the state board of directors for the Minnesota Council for the Gifted and Talented (MCGT), and is a Master Facilitator and Trainer for Supporting the Emotional Needs of Gifted children (SENG). She is currently employed by the University of St. Thomas as a research project manager for a Javits Grant project focused on improving identification of and services for gifted at-risk students. Carol also works with the Center for K-12 Guidance as an Independent Educational Consultant, specializing in K-12 educational planning for gifted and talented and twice-exceptional students in the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul.

Tania Lyon

District Talent Development Coordinator
Mankato Area Public Schools

Tania Lyon is the Talent Development Coordinator for Mankato Area Public Schools. Tania has her doctorate degree in Critical Pedagogy from the University of St. Thomas. She spent 24 years as a secondary English Language Arts Teacher. In 2011, Tania was recipient of the statewide WEM Foundation’s Outstanding Educator Award in Ethics in Education. Tania also taught Advanced Placement Language and Composition, served as an AP exam reader, and table leader.
