Finding and Sustaining “The Zone”

Helping students find their Zone of Proximal Development is essential to optimizing potential. Finding a student's "zone" is only part of the challenge; sustaining a student's experience in that sweet spot where passion and potential intersect is also critical. In this session, you will learn how to extend classroom-learning experiences to stretch students' capabilities. We focus on raising abstraction within the curriculum through concepts, embracing the tools of inquiry and creative thinking, achieving depth and complexity within content areas, and utilizing digital resources to move learning forward. Teach your students that learning begins outside of their comfort zone!

Taught in Durham Public Schools for 31 years. Worked an additional 2 years in Orange County Schools. Served a a liaison for the US Department of Education Middle Shool Violence Prevention Project from 2006-2009. Began working with the AIG Licensure Program at Duke in 2006. I am on the Executive Board of NCAGT, serving as vice president for the years 2017-18. Served as co-chair for NCAGT Conference 2014 and 2015.

Kristen R. Stephens

Associate Professor of the Practice
Duke University

Dr. Kristen R. Stephens is an associate professor of the practice in the Program in Education at Duke University where she directs the Academically/Intellectually Gifted Licensure Program for teachers. Prior to this appointment, Dr. Stephens served as the gifted education research specialist for the Duke University Talent Identification Program. She is the co-author of numerous books and co-editor of the Practical Strategies Series in Gifted Education (Prufrock Press), a series comprised of over 30 books on issues pertinent to gifted child education. Dr. Stephens has served on the board of directors for the National Association for Gifted Children and is past-president of the North Carolina Association for Gifted and Talented. She currently serves on the board of directors for the American Association for Gifted Children.
