Teacher referral is a critical pathway to services for students with exceptionalities, with teacher referrals being a common source for entry into an identification process. Yet, questions remain about the reliability of teacher referral compared to other approaches, particularly given the persistent underrepresentation of particular populations in gifted programs. In this study, we explore the relationships among a nonverbal ability test, a mathematics and reading achievement test, and the Gifted Behaviors Rating Scale and whether those relationships differ for students who receive a meal subsidy and for students who identify as an underrepresented minority.
