Triangular Theory of Geek: Learning and Talent Development In Informal Settings

Today's teens seem constantly plugged into social networking sites, text messaging, and gaming networks. Yet we know so little about how these “geeking out” spaces influence their identity, creativity, and learning. Popularization of geek culture and emergence of web-facilitated communities of practice present an opportunity for our field to rethink our current models of giftedness. This session explores research on how gifted youth use the Web for cultivating their talents, presents a framework that helps unify research on talent development and online engagement, and discusses ways schools might use it to provide effective feedback, mentoring, and guidance.

Eric Calvert

Associate Director
Northwestern University Center for Talent Development

Eric Calvert is an Associate Director at the Northwestern University Center for Talent Development. Calvert oversees the Gifted LearningLinks online program for gifted and academically advanced students (http://ctd.northwestern.edu/online). Previously, he has served as Assistant Director for Gifted Education and International Education at the Ohio Department of Education, and as Director of Youth Programs for the Gifted Education Resource Institute (GERI) at Purdue University. Dr. Calvert also contributes time to several gifted education organizations, including serving NAGC through the professional development committee, NAGC Expert Speakers Program, and as a reviewer for NAGC research publications. He also serves as a governing board member for the Ohio Association for Gifted Children and the Illinois Association for Gifted Children. He holds a doctorate in educational leadership from Bowling Green State University and an M.S.Ed. in educational psychology with an emphasis in gifted education from Purdue. His interests include technology-integrated curriculum models, the role of technology in students' informal learning and thinking, and educational structures that support opportunities for acceleration and talent development.
