Spotlight on the Gifted Academy

The presenters share the development of and unique features of one urban school district's gifted academy. This gifted school serves scholars in grades 3 through 8 with plans to expand to grades K-12. We share information about the preparation for the opening of the academy, including gaining support and approval, logistics, and student placement. Discussion includes information about program design, curriculum materials, and other features in this school merging mastery instruction, inquiry, project-based learning, and community experiences to create a home for gifted learners. Sample planning tools are provided. Finally, presenters reflect on lessons learned in the inaugural years and plans for the academy's future.

Colleen S. Boyle

Colleen Boyle has been an educator for more than 20 years, nearly all in gifted education in schools in Ohio and Texas as well as with the Department of Defense Education Activity. Dr. Boyle holds a bachelor degree in elementary education, masters degrees in gifted education and educational administration, and a doctorate in educational psychology. She currently serves as Director of Gifted and Talented with Columbus City Schools. Dr. Boyle is a past president of Gifted Coordinators of Central Ohio and currently serves as president of the Ohio Association for Gifted Children. The Ohio Department of Education has included Dr. Boyle in committee work with approving assessment instruments for gifted identification, creating draft state rules for gifted identificaiton and services, and developing the state's gifted indicator used when reporting district and school outcomes from gifted education. She enjoys working with educators and families to plan appropriate interventions for gifted learners. Her research interests include the social-emotional aspects of gifted learners, educational and psychological assessment, and giftedness within families.
