Design-based tasks are excellent tools for fostering creative thinking and products. Students use the engineering design process to assist them in modifying designs based on testing and discussion. Making these discussions more intentional through inquiry-based questioning can serve as a scaffold for students to develop their creative ideas into creative products. This presentation demonstrates how inquiry-based questioning can be used as a scaffold to assist students in better developing their creative ideas and turning them into creative products through a framework called ideational code-switching. Examples of students' experiences with a design-based STEM activity are showcased.
