Tiering Instruction without Overwhelming Educators: Low-preparation, High-impact Strategies

Saturday, November 11
3:45 PM - 4:45 PM
Location: 204

Tiered instruction is a crucial strategy aligning complexity to student readiness. Yet the inconvenient truth is that many educators, particularly those new to gifted education, feel overwhelmed by how to proceed. In this session, educators access realistic tiering techniques and examine how ability grouping and tiered instruction differ. Explore five research-based strategies that more effectively and efficiently tier instruction: generalizable scaffolds; differentiated graphic organizers; triggers eliciting abstract thinking, complexity, and depth; tiered learning stations; and assessments. Examine resources and websites. Exit prepared to tier lessons that ensure differentiation for gifted learners is as sustained a practice as accommodations for struggling students.
