CITY Academy - meeting Expectations for Egagement and Success in the Gifted Cluster

Saturday, November 11
1:15 PM - 1:45 PM
Location: 211 B

The Center for Intellectually Talented Youth (CITY) is Broward County's only gifted cluster; serving 225 students in grades 3-8. The student body is mostly made up of underrepresented populations who became eligible for gifted services through Florida's Plan B initiative. As a district that sponsors universal screening, uses Plan B, and offers gifted services at all schools; how does the CITY cluster compare to the services at magnet programs and zoned schools for the other 13,000 gifted students in the county? Does CITY provide services that increase student engagement and success? Or does the gifted-only classroom increase the gifted-underachiever probability? Do test scores prove CITY's validity or self-actualization of students?

M. Jacob Aronin

Coordinator of Gifted Services
Broward County Schools

Currently the Coordinator for Gifted Services for Broward County Schools. My department trains teachers, ESE specialists as well as helping our schools find, screen and test under represented gifted populations. I also teach gifted endorsement courses for Broward Virtual University.
Previously I was the Chair of the CITY Academy at Parkway Middle School of the Arts. I started as the Drama teacher for the arts magnet. Then moved to CITY to teach 6th, 7th and 8th grade Language Arts. CITY is (Center for Intellectually Talented Youth) is Broward County’s only gifted cluster. CITY offers gifted only in core class for grades 3-8. I continue to write enrichment projects for Broward Education Foundation and Elmer’s Glue/Kids In Needs where teachers can receive grants to adapt the projects for their classrooms.
Prior to working in Broward I was a professor at Adelphi University and the School for Film and Television, both in New York. I am a frequent presenter for gifted symposiums as well as creating special projects for the Broward Center’s educational programs. I have written for television and the stage with shows off-Broadway, London and across the United states. Since moving to Florida in 1998 I have come to love the water and my dogs are great boaters, too! So when not in class I am usually down in the Keys enjoying the best that Florida has to offer a former New Yorker!
