PBL and the Gifted Learner

This session gives an example of integrating project-based learning (PBL) in a 1st grade resource gifted classroom. Attendees will discover the benefits of PBL and how to implement PBL effectively in the gifted classroom. The presenters give a detailed example of a 1st grade PBL: How does Design Impact Flight?

After completing an M. Ed. in College Student Affairs Administration at The University of Georgia, Jere served as the University's Coordinator of Academic Enhancement for six years. In this position she worked to help incoming students achieve academic success. During her time at UGA, she earned a M. Ed. in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages with a focus on Applied Linguistics. Upon completing this degree, she helped open one of Georgia's 1st public bilingual Schools, Unidos Dual Language Charter School in addition to teaching Applied Linguistics for MRESA. While working as a kindergarten/1st grade teacher at Unidos, she earned a M. Ed in ESOL with a focus on early childhood education from Georgia State University. Two years later she accepted a teaching position at Charles R. Drew Charter School in Atlanta Georgia. Here she has taught 1st and 2nd grade, and has served as the 1st-3rd grade gifted education teacher for 4 years. Currently Jere strives to integrate STEAM/PBL into her 1st, 2nd, 3rd grade units. Additionally, she designed and maintains the gifted department's web page and co-started/coaches Drew's K-5 Chess Club.
