Twelve Essential Strategies for Motivating Gifted Learners

When gifted/high-ability learners are motivated, it increases their productivity and their enjoyment of learning. We examine twelve motivational factors! We consider optimal ways parents can encourage and reinforce efforts, nurture content mastery, strengthen communication, model good practices, offer choice, foster autonomy, and promote downtime. We discuss how to be fair, help kids forge meaningful relationships, and harness creativity. Plus, we discuss the nuances and importance of considering individual and gifted-related capacities, and being attuned to the ebb-and-flow of children’s and teen’s lives. These dozen themes are woven together, creating a comprehensive blueprint designed to facilitate and maximize motivation, enabling learners to meet gifted-related demands, overcome challenges, and be happily productive.

Joanne Foster, Ed.D. has worked in the field of gifted education for over thirty years, focusing on ways to encourage and support high-ability learners. She is a parent, educational consultant, university instructor, and she has a doctoral degree in Human Development and Applied Psychology from the University of Toronto. She is the author of several books, including the recently released "Bust Your BUTS: Tips for Teens Who Procrastinate" (2017), and its predecessor "Not Now, Maybe Later: Helping Children Overcome Procrastination" (2015) - both published by Great Potential Press. She is co-author (with Dona Matthews) of the acclaimed "Beyond Intelligence: Secrets for Raising Happily Productive Kids" (2014, House of Anansi Press). The authors' first book, "Being Smart About Gifted Education: A Guidebook for Educators and Parents" (2009, Great Potential Press), was a National Best Book Awards Finalist, a Mom's Choice Gold Award Recipient, winner of Exceptionality Education Canada's Exceptional Book of the Year, and received the Arizona Book Award for Publishing Excellence.

Dr. Foster taught Psychological Foundations of Learning and Development for twelve years at the University of Toronto, and continues to offer expertise as a Gifted Education Liaison. She works alongside teams of educators in school districts, boards, and other educational and online settings, conducting teacher training and PD sessions, advising, and providing targeted consultation in strategic programming and best practice. She wrote the featured column "ABCs of Being Smart" for NAGC's "Parenting for High Potential" magazine, and she writes the column "Fostering Kids' Success," for "The Creativity Post." Dr. Foster speaks to parent groups about creativity, productivity, procrastination, and complexities and implications of high-level development. She facilitates community networking in gifted education and intelligence-building, serves on advisory committees, and presents on a variety of topics at conferences and learning venues across North America and beyond. www.joannefoster.ca
