SEM in a Middle School Through STEM

Does it seem impossible to use the Schoolwide Enrichment Model in your middle school due to curriculum calendars and required testing constraints? One innovative middle school chose to form a Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Club to provide fun and enrichment for students after school. Type 1 activities invited the whole student body to STEM-related events, while Type 2 activities explored activities of interest. Members of the STEM Club engaging in Type 3 activities experienced more specific topics as individuals or small groups and were provided the opportunity for competition.

Dr. Pat Sanders of Brandon, Florida holds a master of reading degree, a specialist’s degree in administration, and a doctorate in organizational leadership. With more than 40 years of teaching experience she has taught all levels, PreK through adults. She was recently recognized as one of Florida’s high-impact teachers, and is known for her innovative STEM programming and math acceleration program that has become a model for the Hillsborough County School District—the eighth largest district in the country. Dr. Sanders co-wrote materials for training gifted teachers in the Hillsborough County School District and in the state of Florida, and co-authored math curriculum for the district. She teaches accelerated and gifted students at Randall Middle School. The STEM Club she founded in 2012 now involves more than 200 students in after-school programs ranging from robotics to coding to bridge building.
