Shining the Light on GLBTQ Students Through Literature

It’s time to Shine a Light on GLBTQ Students. It is time for us to support, to nurture, and to meet the needs of this special group of gifted students. One positive and readily available strategy is to use bibliotherapy. Through literature, we can support these students, and in addition sensitize their peers to the stresses and injustices that GLBTQ students meet every day of their lives. In this session, we discuss the process of bibliotherapy and review novels with GLBTQ themes. Guidelines for using this strategy are provided, along with a Book List.

Robert (Bob) W. Seney

Professor Emeritus/Gifted Studies
Mississippi University for Women

Robert W. Seney (Bob) is Professor Emeritus/Gifted Studies from Mississippi University for Women, where he was a member of the faculty for fifteen years. While at MUW, he served as the Coordinator of Graduate Programs in Education, the major instructor in the Masters of Gifted Studies Program, and the Director of the Mississippi Governor’s School. He remains active in several organizations such as the World Council for Gifted Children, the National Association for the Gifted and Talented, the Colorado Association for Gifted Children and the Colorado Academy of Educators of the Gifted, Talented, and Creative. He presents at their conferences and has served in leadership positions in all of these organizations. He was a member of the NAGC Board of Directors: serving on the first Editorial Advisory Board of NAGC’s Parenting for High Potential, NAGC’s publication for parents, a reviewer for the Gifted Child Quarterly, and until recently wrote a column on books for NAGC’s Teaching for High Potential. He writes a column, About Books, for the 2eNewsletter, an electronic newsletter for parents and teachers of twice exceptional gifted students. He was the Chair of the 2005 World Conference for Gifted Children in New Orleans, Louisiana. Before university service, he was the coordinator of gifted programs for Spring Branch Independent School District, Houston, Texas; a teacher of the gifted; and an administrator in non-public schools. He has served over 40 years in gifted education. He earned his doctorate from the University of Houston in Gifted Studies. He has been a featured speaker at the Asia-Pacific Conference for Gifted Education in Bangkok, Thailand. He is a member of the NAGC’s Expert Speakers Bureau.
