Addressing Excellence Gaps Through Talent Search Programs: Models for Schools and Districts

Excellence gaps are finally receiving national attention from educators, but have been the focus of talent search organizations since their inception. Through above-grade-level testing and outside-of-school gifted programming, many low income, gifted minority children are identified and given opportunities to develop their academic talents. In this session, The Center for Bright Kids, The Talent Identification Program (Duke), The Center for Talented Youth (Johns Hopkins), and The Center for Talent Development (Northwestern) will share their efforts and programs to increase the identification of under-represented students and serve them appropriately through online, summer, and weekend programming. These are presented as models for schools/districts to similarly address excellence gaps in their local settings.

Paula Olszewski-Kubilius

Director, Center for Talent Development
Northwestern University

Dr. Paula Olszewski-Kubilius is currently the director of the Center for Talent Development at Northwestern University and a professor in the School of Education and Social Policy. Over the past 33 years, she has created programs for all kinds of gifted learners and written extensively on issues of talent development, particularly on programming for under-represented gifted students. Her most recent work is a monograph written with Rena Subotnik and Frank Worrell, “Rethinking Giftedness and Gifted Education: A Proposed Direction Forward Based on Psychological Science”, published by the Association for Psychological Science. She has served as editor of Gifted Child Quarterly, co-editor of the Journal of Secondary Gifted Education and on the editorial review boards of Gifted and Talented International, The Roeper Review, and Gifted Child Today. She is currently vice-chair of the board of trustees of the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy and a member of the board of directors of the Illinois Association for the Gifted. She also serves on that advisory boards for the Center for Gifted Education at the College of William and Mary and the Robinson Center for Young Scholars at the University of Washington. She is the immediate past president of the National Association for Gifted Children from whom she received the Early Scholar Award in 1987, the Distinguished Scholar Award in 2009, and the GCQ Paper of the Year Award in 2011.

Amy Rushneck

Executive Director
Center for Bright Kids

Dr. Amy Rushneck is the Executive Director of the Center for Bright Kids Regional Talent Development Center. Dr. Rushneck spent over ten years with the Wisconsin Center for Academically Talented Youth, an affiliate center of Northwestern University's Center for Talent Development and the Midwest Academic Talent Search. During that time, she also taught multicultural and diversity education courses and secondary education methodologies in the Teacher Education program at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Now in her tenure out in Denver, Dr. Rushneck has published various articles and presents regularly at state and national meetings and conferences, as well as serving on the board of the Colorado Association for Gifted and Talented. She is also active in state policy development on behalf of gifted and talented students and their families, particularly in relation to high school graduation requirements. She has been with CBK for over a decade through its evolution as a regional Talent Development Center, and she has over 25 years of experience with academic talent search and talent development summer programs held at the University of Colorado Boulder.

Jonathan Plucker

Julian C. Stanley Professor of Talent Development
Johns Hopkins University

Jonathan Plucker is teh Julian C. Stanley Professor of Talent Development at Johns Hopkins University, where he works at the Center for Talented Youth and School of Education. Prof. Plucker studies high achieving students from an education policy and psychological perspective, with a focus on creativity, 21st century skills, and excellence gaps.
