Complex machines from internal combustion engines to helicopters and machine tools contain many mechanisms. Building mechanical mechanisms stimulates individuals' creative imaginations. Applying steps of Engineering Design Process (Ask, Imagine, Plan, Create, and Improve) to design and build simple wooden/paper-made mechanical mechanisms and finally a Rube Goldberg-type chain machine or a "Big Machine" such as Theo Jansen's Walking Machine (Strandbeest) embodies abstract physics, math, and engineering concepts in concrete experiences. These processes can be used to design instructional content with embedded pedagogical strategies to develop creative and critical thinking.

Mehdi is a doctoral student in Gifted, Creative, and Talented Studies. He worked for more than 10 years in the Iranian National Organization for Development of Exceptional Talents (NODET), where he had studied as middle and high school student. He was the head of the Physics department in the Allame Helli gifted high school, in Tehran (2004-2011). He was also a teacher of Physics (grades 6-11) for more than 10 years. He received his Bachelor's and first Master's degree in Physics from Shahid Beheshti University, Iran. He received his second masters in Education from University of British Columbia (UBC), Canada, in 2013. He is a PhD student in Gifted, Creative, and Talented Education, at Gifted Education Resource Institute (GERI), Purdue University. Mehdi’s research interests are gifted education, critical thinking, wisdom, creativity, science and physics education, and STEM.
