Fixing Boredom: Is This Our First Mistake?

Boredom is a common complaint among gifted students, often inspiring a frenzy of activity on the part of an educator or parent to remedy the situation. However, boredom is not always about being bored, and the claim can represent multiple conditions: anxiety, overstimulation, tedium, or disinterest. Furthermore, multiple researchers have shown that boredom may actually be productive for creative output. In this session we discuss an empirical exploration of the experience of boredom among gifted students. Student focus groups were conducted on causes of boredom, multiple interpretations of the complaint, and strategies for coping. The data collected will form the basis of an affective curriculum.

Dr. Kristofor Wiley earned his M.Ed. and certification in gifted education through Drury University before teaching for six years in a full-time program for gifted middle school students. After a subsequent tour with the U.S. Peace Corps, he earned his Doctorate in gifted education at the University of Virginia. Upon graduation, he returned to Drury to teach curriculum for gifted students and direct the secondary educator preparation program.

Dr. Brandi L. Klepper is a Missouri licensed, clinical psychologist who specializes in children, adolescents and adults who are gifted, talented and/or high achieving. She has had a private psychology practice specializing in gifted and talented individuals since 2002. Before that, as a college and graduate student, she worked therapeutically with gifted and high achieving individuals and in her dissertation she researched emotions in gifted adolescents. Throughout her life, Dr. Klepper has participated in gifted services as a student, camper, RA, teacher, camp counselor, presenter, psychologist, and consultant. In addition to her private practice, she teaches at Drury University in the Masters of Education, gifted certification program. She has taught at the undergraduate and graduate levels since 2002, including time teaching at Drury University, Cox College, and The School of Professional Psychology at Forest Institute. Dr. Klepper also serves as a Resident Counselor at Dury University's Center for Gifted Education PreCollege Programs. Further, she has presented at district and statewide conferences of the Gifted Association of Missouri, at district and statewide conferences of the Kansas Association for the Gifted, Talented and Creative, as well as to various groups in Missouri and Kansas.
