Illuminating Creativity in Twice-Exceptional Learners

Twice-exceptional students, especially those with ADHD, specific learning disabilities, and serious emotional disabilities, often score higher on tests measuring creativity. They think “out of the box,” do not follow the rules, and are labeled dreamers, lazy students and nuisances. How can we nurture creativity through their strengths? First, we need to look at their creativity in a positive light, view creative characteristics as cognitive strengths, and nourish them by creating learning environments that develop and encourage risk-taking, complexity, curiosity, and imagination. This session provides ideas for creating learning experiences that help 2e students excel by unlocking their creative potential.

Cheryl Franklin-Rohr

Cheryl Franklin-Rohr is a Gifted Coordinator for San Luis Valley BOCES in southern Colorado. She was a part of the Twice-Exceptional Consultant for Colorado Department of Education for ten years. Cheryl is the Past-President of the Colorado Association for Gifted and Talented (CAGT). She received her Masters Degree in Gifted and Talented from University of Northern Colorado in 1986 and completed her Special Education Administrative Licensure at UNC in 2011.

Nanette Jones

Twice Exceptional Consultant
CDE

Nanette Jones is a veteran teacher of 33 years from Aurora Public Schools where she spent most of her career as a GT Teacher and was the Gifted Facilitator at a gifted magnet school, Aurora Quest K8. She has her M.A. in general ed. and M.A. endorsement in GT. Nanette is currently a Twice Exceptional Consultant for CDE, on the Executive Director of CAGT, a member of NAGC and CAEGTC, and has presented at both CAGT and NAGC.

Wendy Leader

Consultant

Wendy Leader, Ph.D. has been active in gifted education for more than 25 years. She has taught in elementary classrooms and gifted programs, served in a district capacity as a resource consultant for many schools, and been a district coordinator for gifted education. She served as a Principal Consultant in Gifted Education and Twice-Exceptionality for the Colorado Department of Education. She is currently a private consultant in gifted, general and special education.

Wendy earned her M.A. in Teaching the Gifted from the University of Northern Colorado and her Ph. D. in Special Education/Education of the Gifted at the University of Arizona. She is a published author in the field and has presented at more than 20 NAGC conventions, as well as at numerous state and local conferences. Her specialities include creativity, twice-exceptional learners, curriculum, differentiation, and thinking skills.

Wendy loves being active in NAGC. She has served as Chair and Chair-Elect of two different Networks; has served on the Education Committee for several years with two years as Chair; and was on the Program Committee for two years before the 2012 Denver convention.
