79 - U.P. Time--Unlocking the Potential of Gifted Students from Low Socioeconomic Backgrounds

Participants learn how one district worked with students from a low-performing, low socio-economic school that showed potential of performing at higher levels in order to achieve advanced level performance. Presenters discuss the district- and campus-level needs assessment, the development of engaging, advanced level lessons, the structure of the program, and the students' improvement made at the conclusion of the program.

Kayla Kubitza serves as an instructional specialist for the Waco ISD Advanced Academic Services department after working in the district as an elementary teacher. She received her Bachelor’s degree in Education from Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas, and accepted a job working in Killeen I.S.D. teaching kindergarten soon after. In 2012, she joined the WISD staff as a kindergarten, second, and third grade teacher, working primarily with gifted and talented students. She recently completed her Master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction at Tarleton State University and will begin doctoral coursework next summer. A certified Master Reading Teacher, she brings a large wealth of information to classrooms as she assists teachers in refining their differentiation strategies, raising their rigor, and appropriately compacting to best serve gifted learners.
