77 - Transitioning to Middle School: A Summer Enrichment Experience for the Gifted

In our presentation, we share a summer enrichment experience offered to rising 6th grade gifted students by Lee County Schools located in Sanford, North Carolina. Kaleidoscope Camp is a two-week enrichment program specifically designed to mentally challenge and inspire Academically and Intellectually Gifted students transitioning from elementary (5th grade) to middle school (6th grade). Course offerings are based on students' specific educational interests. Students choose two courses from the seven course offerings consisting of Art, Music, Drama, Building Hot Air Balloons, Angry Birds and More, Code Studio, and Forensics. Kaleidoscope Camp concludes with an optional 3-day field trip to Washington, D.C.

Karen Foushee

Karen L. Foushee serves as the Lee County School’s District AIG Lead Teacher in Sanford, N.C. She received her B.A. in Education and her M.Ed. from East Carolina University. She received her gifted license through East Carolina and Confratute at the University of Connecticut. Karen also taught English in Japan as part of the Japanese Exchange and Teaching Program. Her career spans for over 35 years, teaching kindergarten through the university level, with most of those years working in gifted education. Karen enjoys spending time with her family, working in church ministries, cooking and gardening.

Gail P. Smith

Gail Puryear Smith serves as the AIG Coordinator with Lee County Schools in Sanford, NC. She received her B.A. in Education from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and her M.Ed. from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Ms. Smith’s teaching career spans over 20 years in Lee County and two years in Chatham County. During her career, she has taught 4th and 5th grades in the regular classroom and taught grades K-5 as an AIG Specialist. Ms. Smith loves spending time with friends and family, especially her eight grandchildren. Her hobbies include reading, zumba, running and supporting the North Carolina Tar Heels!
