Vietnam now ranks sixth among all sending countries, according to the latest SEVIS update, with most of that enrollment in higher education. While the pool of potential students is expanding, so, too, is the competition. This session provides recruitment strategies that do not involve the use of education agents.

Managing Director
Capstone Vietnam

Mark Ashwill is managing director of Capstone Vietnam, a full-service educational consulting company with offices in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC). From 2005-2009, he served as country director of the Institute of International Education-Viet Nam. He has written and presented extensively on issues related to Vietnam, U.S.-Vietnam relations, Vietnamese studying overseas, accreditation, international student access and equity, international student recruitment, commissions-based recruitment, the development of intercultural competence, and Vietnam market conditions. His most recent book, Vietnam Today: A Guide to a Nation at a Crossroads was published in 2005. In 2003, Ashwill became the first US citizen to be awarded a Fulbright Senior Specialists Grant to Vietnam. He is an adviser to VietAbroader, a student-run Vietnamese nonprofit whose mission is to empower Vietnamese youth to contribute to Vietnam's sustainable development, a member of the Advisory Board of Teachers for Vietnam, a U.S.-based non-profit organization, and the only foreign member of the Science and Training Council of the University of Education, Viet Nam National University, Hanoi. Diana Sampson

Associate Vice President, International Education
Shoreline Community College

Diana Sampson is the Associate Vice President of International Education at Shoreline Community College in Seattle, Washington, serving 10,000 resident students and over 1000 international students from 50 different countries. She currently serves as the President for the Northwest International Education Association—a non-profit association comprised of 20 members colleges in the Pacific Northwest working together to advance global education. Diana has studied, lived, traveled and worked extensively abroad for most of her professional career. Having traveled to the Far East since the 1980’s, Diana has gained expertise working closely with Asian countries and cultures. She regularly presents at international conferences on topics related to global education, global partnerships, international relations and global exchanges.

Diana is a member of the Northwest International Education Association, the Washington State China Relations Council and she also serves on the board of the Washington State China Chamber of Commerce. She received her Bachelor of Arts in English Literature and her Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology from Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington.

Stephanie Sieggreen

Executive Director, International Enrollment Management
Western Kentucky University

Ms. Stephanie Sieggreen is the the Executive Director for International Enrollment Management (IEM) at Western Kentucky University (WKU), Stephanie is responsible for the oversight and strategic planning for all areas within IEM. These areas include international student recruitment, international student (undergraduate) admission and credential evaluations, international student and scholar services, sponsored international student agencies and government entities, an undergraduate Pathway Program, and serving as the liaison between ESLi (an English language program provider) and WKU. Stephanie has over 20 years of experience in higher education both within the U.S. and abroad encompassing almost all facets of international education.
