Global Partner Session: Addressing Challenges of the Intercultural Classroom: Further Lessons Learned

This interactive session will introduce research results sponsored by ELS on international student perceptions of their classroom experience and campus social integration, demonstrating the value of an on-campus intensive English program. Presenters share findings as well as recommendations and strategies for better integration.

Ward Morrow

Vice President of Academic Affairs
ELS Educational Services, Inc.

Ward Morrow is the Vice President of Academic Affairs at ELS Language Centers. He has been involved in international education for 33 years as a teacher, Academic Director and Center Director. Ward worked as a District Director at ELS for 10 years before moving to Academic Affairs. He has extensive experienced in curriculum development and second language assessment. Ward co-chaired the first ELS committee to create the customized textbooks used at ELS, and he has overseen the development of all subsequent editions. He has also worked on assessment systems to ensure that students at all ELS centers in the US and Canada achieve the same learning outcomes at all levels of study. Most recently, Ward has overseen the institutional research at ELS examining the academic success of students who complete ELS level 112. He holds an MA in TESOL from Adelphi University.

Terence W. Miller

Director, Office of International Education
Marquette University

Terence Miller is Senior International Officer (SIO) at Marquette University. He oversees International Student and Scholar Services, Education Abroad, the ESL Program and manages strategic international partnerships. He was a criminal defense attorney in New York City; a human rights attorney in Chile; and directed an international public policy office in Washington, D.C. He earned his Juris Doctorate (J.D.) from St. John’s University. He serves as a legal advisor to Association International Education Administrators (AIEA).

Heather H. Ward

Associate Director, Center for Internationalization and Global Engagement
American Council on Education

Heather H. Ward is associate director for internationalization and global engagement at the American Council on Education, where she develop programs that support U.S. and international institutions’ strategic goals for comprehensive internationalization and cross-border collaboration. Heather previously served as associate director for internationalization and outreach at George Mason University and as director of international programs at Mary Baldwin College. Heather’s prior experience in international affairs and public policy involved work with the Vera Institute of Justice, Woodrow Wilson Presidential Library, U.S. Department of Justice, Americas Society, and U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee. She was selected to participate in the Fulbright-Nehru International Education Administrators seminar in India in 2012, and the DAAD Germany Today program on higher education internationalization in 2015. Heather holds a BA in Latin American Studies and Spanish from Vanderbilt University and a Master of International Affairs from Columbia University. She has lived in Ecuador and participated in education abroad programs in Guatemala and Spain.
