Panelists share information on lessons learned during their career pathways to senior leadership positions in international education.

Mandy Hansen

Director, Global Engagement
University of Colorado at Colorado Springs

Dr. Mandy Hansen serves as the Director for the Global Engagement Office. She has worked in international education in a professional capacity for over 15 years. Dr. Hansen’s institutional knowledge and experience involve international work at a community college, a small private university, and large public institutions. She has directed international admissions and recruitment, coordinated orientations, developed partnership programs, conducted grant writing/proposal writing, and advised international students and scholars.

Dr. Hansen is an alumnus of the Fulbright Program for International Administrators in Germany and served in leadership positions with organizations such as NAFSA: Association of International Education and the National Association for College Admission Counseling. Her doctoral degree is in educational leadership and her research involved a narrative inquiry into the lived experiences and professional journeys of women senior international officers. Her education includes a bachelor’s degree in business relations and Latin American studies at the University of Pittsburgh, a master’s degree in non-profit management at Alfred University, and a doctorate degree at Northern Arizona University.

Dr. Hansen spends much of her free time hiking throughout the West and has a strong affinity for the Southwest, pottery, paintings. Her favorite book is Claiming Ground by Laura Bell and she enjoys a strong cup of coffee in the morning with a heavy pour of cream!

Susan Bender

Senior Director of Global Affairs
University of California, Irvine

Susie Bender, Ph.D., has worked in international education for the past twenty-nine years. She currently serves as the Senior International Officer (SIO) and Executive Director of International Engagement and Programs at the University of Idaho. Among her recent accomplishments, she developed the University of Idaho’s new international strategic plan in collaboration with representatives from all of the colleges (the International Engagement Council) and prepared The International Profile, which is an assessment of all international dimensions at the university.

Bender has held many leadership roles in international education, particularly in NAFSA: Association of International Educators and AIEA: The Association for International Education Administrators. She was the NAFSA Region XII Representative for International Educational Leadership (IEL)(2008-2010); she served as the Nevada State Whip on Advocacy Issues 2002-2011 and helped pass a State Resolution on International Education in Nevada in 2006; she was the Content Chair for NAFSA’s 60th Anniversary Conference in D.C. (2008), which attracted over 9000 participants, and served on the NAFSA’s Executive Committee (2006-2008); she served as the Co-chair on the National Task Force on Intercultural Learning/International Teaching 2004-2005; she served on the National COMSEC Team (for community outreach) and was a member of the National Committee on Ethical Practice (2003-2006); she chaired the Intercultural Special Interest Group (1997-2001), chaired NAFSA Region XII in 1998, and has played a variety of other roles in NAFSA. Currently she is serving as a member of the Strategic Issues Task Force and the conference planning committee for AIEA.

Bender earned her B.A. in Business Administration (1984) and her M.A. in Education with a specialization in College Student Personnel Administration (1986) from Colorado State University. She received a Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Nevada, Reno, in 2003, specializing in Public Policy and Environmental Policy. Before moving to Idaho, she directed the Office of International Students and Scholars at the University of Nevada, Reno (1995-2012) and was an international student advisor at Nevada (1991-1995); ran the Holland International Living Center at Cornell University (1988-1991); was an international student advisor and residence hall director at the University of Portland in Oregon (1986-1988); and worked and studied at Colorado State University (1980-1986).

Angela E. Miller

Director Study Abroad

Dr. Angela Miller is the Director of Study Abroad Services the University of Florida. Her research focus is in the area of campus internationalization, with emphasis on Global Learning in the Undergraduate Curriculum. She has presented on various topics at NAFSA conferences (including advising under-represented students, and global learning.

Susan B. Sutton

Consultant for Global Learning & Collaboration
Institute of International Education

Susan Buck Sutton is a consultant on global learning and engagement in higher education, with 40 years experience as faculty and chief international administrator at two institutions: Bryn Mawr College and Indiana University. She is currently a Fellow at IIE’s Center on International Partnerships and Senior Associate, at ACE’s Center for International and Global Initiatives. Sutton has been President of AIEA and received its 2018 Klasek Award for Contributions to International Education. She has published 5 books and 70+ articles, and given numerous presentations and workshops, both nationally and internationally, on strategic international planning, partnerships, and curriculum development. She holds a Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina (Chapel Hill) and a B.A. from Bryn Mawr College, both in anthropology.
Within NAFSA, Sutton has served in numerous capacities: Editorial Board, International Education; Chair of the International Educational Leadership KC; Chair of the Women's College MIG; Special Events Co-Chair, 2018 Local Arrangements Team, Annual conference.
