International Student Academic Integration Issues at Small, Medium, and Large Institutions

As international student enrollment continues to grow on U.S. college campuses, schools must both bolster their existing student support services and develop innovative academic support programs to increase retention, graduation rates, and overall satisfaction. Presenters discuss the initiatives they have implemented to facilitate greater academic success. This session was selected as the Region II conference highlight.

Holly Kottke

International Student Advisor
Arizona State University

Holly has been an international educator for nine years. She has served as a Study Abroad Advisor at Portland Community College (2008-2013) and as an ASU International Student Advisor (2014-2017). She joined the ASU International Student Academic Integration Team in July 2015. Holly earned a BA in International Affairs from CU-Boulder, a MA in International Education from the SIT Graduate Institute, and is currently working toward a TESOL certification. She has studied in Russia, Turkey, and with Semester-at-Sea. As a NAFSA member, she volunteered as the Region I Conference Planner (2013) and with the Education Abroad Regulatory Practices Committee as a Spain Consular Affairs Liaison (2012-2014).

Ruby Cheng

Yanjie(Ruby) Cheng, MBA , International Student Recruitment and Services Coordinator , Univeristy of Colorado Colorado Springs

Ruby started her U.S. journey as an International Student (from China). She is a dedicated professional and advocate for international students with 6 years of international service and recruitment experiences in both a small liberal art college and a public institution. She has directed international admissions and recruitment, coordinated orientations and developed partnership programs in her international education career. At the international service side, Ruby is an advocate for international students and works diligently with students and leads departmental collaboration with campus offices. While working full time, Ruby is pursuing a doctorate degree in Education Equity at the University of Colorado. Ruby also served as the Chair of I-Engagement program in 2016 NAFSA Annual Conference in Denver.

Tracy Falconer

Asst Director; Office of International Education
University of Nebraska at Kearney

Tracy is currently an Assistant Director for the Office of International Education at the University of Nebraska at Kearney. In her current role, she oversees all student services, immigration, and admissions for the 300+ F and J student population currently enrolled at UNK. She also serves as the university's PDSO and RO. Tracy is an international education professional with over 10 years experience in the field in the areas of intensive English instruction, non-immigrant visa regulations, orientation and student services programming, and compliance coordination within the university. In her current role, Tracy has focused her attention on redesigning orientation programming, improving communication and advising practices within the office especially on OPT/CPT regulations, and implementation of a Peer Mentor program for new students. Tracy is a NAFSA Academy Alumni, has been a KCISSS proposal reviewer, and has presented at both the Region II conference and the national NAFSA conference.

Paige Progar, Sponsored Student Advisor/DSO/ARO at the University of Colorado Boulder, has an MA in Education, Teaching English as a Second Language, and has been working in the field of International Education for over 30 years, including 9 years as an international student and scholar advisor and over 20 years as an ESL instructor. Among her areas of interest are international perspectives on academic integrity, classroom culture and academic expectations, cultural adaptation, intercultural communication in academic settings, and other issues related to student success and retention.
