This session focuses on how internationalization contributes to global citizenship as proposed in the Sustainable Development Goals at Japanese universities. This session is presented by the Japan Network for International Education (JAFSA).

Sophia University

.Miki SUGIMURA is a professor of Comparative and International Education, Faculty of Human Sciences and Vice President for Global Academic Affairs of Sophia University. She graduated from Ochanomizu Women’s University (B.A.) and University of Tokyo (M.Ed. and Ph.D.) She is a member of grant committee of Japan Foundation for United Nations University (UNU), a member of Follow-up Project by Japan Students Services Organization, a member of Japanese National Committee for UNESCO, a councilor of Japan-China Friendship Center and the President of Japan Comparative Education Society (JCES). Her research topics are regionalism and regionalization through transnational higher education, and international migration and multicultural education. Her recent publications include Cross-border Migration and the Nation-State: Transformation of Civil Society in the Post-Globalization World (2017, editor) Human Security and Peace Building (2017, co-author), Education Sustainable Development and Citizenship Education in the Multi-cultural Societies (2014, co-editor), and papers in English: “Sustaining Cultural Connectivity between Internationalization and Localization: The Significance of the liberal Arts Program in Higher Education” (2017), “Circulating Brains and the Challenge for Higher Education in Japan” (2015), “Roles of Language in Multicultural Education in the Context of Internationalisation”(2015) and “The function of Regional Networks in East Asian Higher Education” (2012).

Taka Horio

Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology - Japan

Ms. Taka HORIO is working at the Higher Education Bureau of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), Japan. She serves as a Deputy Director of Office for International Planning, responsible for internationalization of Japanese universities and inter-university exchange programs.
Ms. HORIO is Japanese national. Before joining Higher Education Bureau of MEXT, she had been working on Japan Copyright Office in the Agency for Cultural Affairs, International Affairs at MEXT, and Japanese National Commission for UNESCO. She also worked for Nagoya University, Japan, as Director of International Planning Division, and for UNESCO Headquarters in Paris as a program officer at the Funds-in-Trust Section.

Peter McCagg

Vice President for Academic Affairs
Akita International University

Prior to arriving in Akita in 2014, Dr. McCagg worked for New York University as Clinical Professor of English and Director of The American Language Institute (2010-2014). He also taught for many years (1984-2010) at International Christian University (ICU), where he served in various administrative assignments including Dean of International Affairs.
For nearly forty years, Dr. McCagg has dedicated his life to helping Japanese engage in responsible and meaningful ways with people from outside Japan, and to helping students from around the world successfully navigate life in Japan.
