Exploring Archetypes of International Education Practitioners: Connecting Identities

Presenting findings from a survey of more than 250 international education professionals, this session introduces four archetypes of international educator identities. Results show commonalities and conflicts among the identities, highlighting the dilemmas and ethical issues that practitioners face. Participants will explore the implications for daily practice and professional development.

Paige E. Butler

Assistant Professor
Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey

Dr. Butler is an Assistant Professor at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey (CA) in the masters degree program for International Education Management. She trains rising professionals for international education administration roles, teaching courses such as Program Design and Assessment, Education Abroad Management, Budgeting, and Student Development Theory. Paige also teaches Onsite Perspectives of Education Abroad Management in Madrid, Spain. Previously, Paige was the Director of Academic Affairs for an education abroad provider organization, where she was responsible for the academic operations of study abroad programs in nine locations world-wide. Prior to this, Paige held positions as an instructor and administrator at Arizona State University, working in study abroad, student development, first-year programs, and academic affairs. Butler earned her EdD in Educational Policy and Leadership Studies in Higher Education at Arizona State University. Her research interests largely center around student development and education abroad. Current projects include research around cultural transitions in education abroad, undocumented student experiences in education abroad, and exploring identities of international education practitioners. Butler is a Forum on Education Abroad Certified Education Abroad Professional, and serves as a Quality Improvement Plan reviewer. Additionally, Paige serves as a trainer for Forum Standards of Good Practice in Education Abroad and is part of the NAFSA Trainer Corps for the Management Development Program.

Katherine Punteney

Program Chair & Associate Professor in International Education
Middlebury Institute of International Studies

Dr. Katherine Punteney is a faculty member of the Middlebury Institute of International Studies where she teaches courses in International Education Management and Intercultural Competence. Her previous roles include Coordinator of International Student Services and Campus Internationalization at California State University, Chico and Program Manager for the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts international center in Pune, India. Her research focuses on internationalization and intercultural education.
