Survey of Essential Publications for International Recruitment and Admissions Staff

This session is designed for anyone interested in building a professional library of print and non-print international enrollment management (IEM) publications. Presenters will provide a survey of selected essentials, followed by an audience discussion of resources. The presenters are the editors of two of NAFSA’s latest books on international recruitment and admissions.

Learning Objectives:

David L. Di Maria

Associate Vice Provost for International Education
University of Maryland-Baltimore County

Dr. David L. Di Maria serves as the associate vice provost for international education at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. He previously served as associate provost for international programs at Montana State University. Dr. Di Maria frequently presents, publishes, consults and trains on best practices pertaining to international education administration. He currently holds leadership positions with NAFSA’s International Education Leadership Knowledge Community, the Editorial Committee of the Association of International Education Administrators and the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities’ Commission on International Initiatives. He previously served as chair of NAFSA's International Enrollment Management Knowledge Community, President of the American International Recruitment Council and he was a Neal Presidential Fellow with the Association of International Education Administrators. Dr. Di Maria earned undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. His doctorate, which he received from the University of Minnesota, focused on internationalization from a P-16 perspective. Dr. Di Maria’s scholarly interests include campus services for international students, international student mobility and the application of systems thinking to internationalization of higher education.

Jessica B. Sandberg

Dean of Enrollment Management
Duke Kunshan University

Jessica currently serves as the Director of International Admissions for Temple University in Philadelphia. Her 15 year history in international enrollment management spans a variety of institutional settings including an urban community college, a suburban liberal arts college, and an American college overseas. An active NAFSA leader and presenter, Jessica recently served as the editor of NAFSA’s Guide to International Recruitment and, prior to that, edited NAFSA’s IEM Spotlight newsletter, from 2014-2016. International education is both a professional and personal passion for Jessica. She is perhaps best known as the leader of the national #YouAreWelcomeHere campaign, developed in late 2016 in response to recruitment and perception challenges for U.S. higher education. Jessica holds a B.A. in Political Science from Moravian College and an M.A. in International Relations from the University of Kent at Brussels. She completed her thesis on the role of international student exchange in American diplomacy in the post 9/11 era.
