Tech-Enhanced Predeparture Orientations in Education Abroad

This interactive session explores the integration of technology into study abroad predeparture activities, thus maximizing time, increasing interaction, and gauging comprehension. Presenters share model practices in technologically-enhanced orientation activities and provide a roadmap of first steps for those considering new technology solutions.

Zachary Klim

Senior Director, Global Affairs & Experiential Learning
New York University

Zack Klim, Senior Director of Global Affairs and Experiential Learning, oversees all aspects of student mobility, manages internship/fieldwork partnerships, and supports the internationalization of curriculum and research across the school. He collaborates with deans, department chairs, faculty, staff and institutional partners to conceptualize, implement, and evaluate NYU Steinhardt’s international programming at home and abroad. Prior to his work at NYU, he served as a Peace Corps volunteer, taught English in New York City schools, worked for USAID, and taught as affiliated faculty for SIT/World Learning. He joined NYU Steinhardt in 2008 after extensive educational work abroad in Bangladesh, Burma, Costa Rica, and Honduras.

Klim is also a doctoral candidate in Sociology of Education. His dissertation examines the emergence of the field of study abroad in the U.S. to deepen our understanding of the determinants of internationalization in higher education and answer critical questions in organizational theory. Extending existing research on study abroad, his work looks beyond the pedagogical to reveal the dynamics of structuration and isomorphism in this subfield of higher education.

Brian Brubaker

Director of Education Abroad
Pennsylvania State University Global Programs

Brian Brubaker, Director of Education Abroad at The Pennsylvania State University, has been active in international education for over twenty years. In previous positions he has served as AVP of Customized Programming at IES Abroad as well as Director of Global Learning and Engagement at Dickinson College. Brian has also worked in international education at Arizona State University and the New England Culinary Institute. He is a Forum Facilitator and leads workshops to educate others on the value and application of the Forum on Education Abroad’s Standards of Good Practice. Brian is also a trained Quality Improvement Program (QUIP) Peer Reviewer, has served on the Forum’s BEVI Outcomes Assessment sub-committee, and presents frequently at domestic and international conferences. In addition to his administrative responsibilities, Brian has taught global marketing courses and co-authored a business case study on organic/fair-trade coffee entrepreneurship in Cameroon. Brian holds an MBA in international management from the Thunderbird School of Global Management and has a BA in international studies.

Elsa Maxwell

Academic Director, Intercultural Learning
CIEE: Council on International Educational Exchange

Dr. Elsa Maxwell is the Academic Director of Intercultural Learning at CIEE. She has worked in the field of education abroad for the past decade in a variety of roles for CIEE's Study and Teach Abroad programs.

In her current position as Academic Director, she oversees intercultural teaching and learning for CIEE's study abroad programs, focusing on curriculum development and instructor training. She also teaches CIEE's signature course 'Intercultural Communication and Leadership' at the Valparaiso, Chile Study Center, where she is remotely based.

Elsa has facilitated International Faculty Development Seminars on intercultural learning, and also serves as a trainer for CIEE's Employee Intercultural Development Program. She has significant experience as an IDI qualified administrator and has presented at major education abroad conferences.

Elsa has a doctorate and a master's degree from the University of Chile in cultural studies and literature. She is originally from Minnesota, where she received her undergraduate degree at Augsburg College.
