Designing a Training Module for Cross-Cultural Communication on Campus

Participants deepen their understanding of the intercultural communication challenges international students face and discover how a training module can benefit their institutions. Presenters will share a three-stage training model designed to break down barriers and enhance communication and understanding. Attendees create a training outline for their home institutions.

Judy L. Ensing

Director of International Programs
University of Hawaii-Manoa Outreach College

Judy Ensing holds a Master’s degree in English as a Second Language from the University of Hawai'i at Manoa (UHM) and has been working on the UHM campus as a practitioner in the field of international education for over 30 years, initially as an ESL instructor and later overseeing ESL programs and short-term programs for international students. Her multi-faceted work involves communication with international students, administrators, staff, and faculty of international educational institutions, and international recruiting agents. She understands and values the importance of cross-cultural understanding when dealing with cultural diversity both across international borders and within a domestic multi-cultural environment such as Honolulu.

Marcella Pitcher DeProto

University of San Francisco

Marcella Pitcher DeProto is the Director of the International Student and Scholar Services office at the University of San Francisco and has been working in International Education since 2004. Marcella has her Master's degree in International Education and has previously worked with the Institute for International Education and the National Democratic Institute. Marcella has served on the NAFSA Northern CA District team and the NAFSA Region XII team and has presented at the NAFSA National, Regional and District Conferences on topics from intercultural communication, to improving the international student experience, to non-resident tax filing. She is passionate about exploring cultural differences and furthering both cross-cultural learning and inter-cultural understanding in today's polarized world.
