In U.S. study abroad relations with higher education systems worldwide, there have been key developments in the varying approaches to hosting and teaching students. How have different countries’ systems adjusted to, or influenced, engagement with U.S. higher education? Practitioners from Asia, Africa, and Europe reflect on key trends in their respective countries.

Mike Nelson has worked nationally in Campus Relations with reputable academic program providers for the last fifteen years. He has helped match students and departments with university partners extensively in the UK, Ireland, mainland Europe, the Middle East and North Africa--from Syria to Tunisia, and across Asia, Australia, New Zealand, and South America. Mike is passionate about how mentorship and memory build the culture of the Education Abroad Field and drive us to excellence. In addition to his full-time role at Barcelona SAE, Mike serves as Executive Co-chair of GOSAT, and is currently Chair of NAFSA Region IV.

Margaret Wiedenhoeft

Executive Director, Center for International Programs
Kalamazoo College Center for International Programs

Margaret Wiedenhoeft is the Executive Director of the Center for International Programs at Kalamazoo College in Kalamazoo, Michigan. She is responsible for all aspects of international and domestic study away programs, including budget, risk assessment and management, and developing international engagement strategy. Wiedenhoeft received her BA in international studies from Emory University and her MBA and PhD from Western Michigan University. Her interest and passion for international education began with her experience living, working, and studying in Berlin, Germany for four years. Her professional interests include advocating for equitable participation for international opportunities, short-term study abroad programming, professional development in international education, international civic engagement projects, and conducting research about the impact and experience of study abroad on U.S. college students.
