Effective Assessment Approaches to Measure Students’ Intercultural Competence

Most institutions value exposing students to international programs. However, few institutions have integrated measures that effectively assess the impact on students’ cultural competence. This session highlights case studies of common assessment tools used by institutions. It also provides attendees with guidance on best ways to assess intercultural competence.

As Vice President of Educational Initiatives with the Cultural Intelligence Center (CQC), Dr. Upton is responsible for leading the center’s educational efforts. She has over twenty years of experience training and consulting with universities, K-12 schools, companies, and non-profit organizations.

Prior to joining the CQC, Dr. Upton was Dean of Business Programs at a small private college where she provided leadership for their professional and graduate studies supervising over one hundred faculty and several thousand students around the world.

She has traveled to numerous countries and has facilitated global business experiences throughout China, Israel and South Africa and several countries in Europe. As part of her doctoral work she studied the relationship between cultural intelligence and success of expatriates working in South Africa.
Upton’s leadership responds to the needs from institutions like Harvard Business School, London School of Economics, University of Michigan, Fudan University, Stanford University, and hundreds of other public and private schools that are committed to assessing and improving the cultural intelligence of their faculty, staff, and students.

In addition to leading the center’s educational initiatives, Dr. Upton plays a significant role in helping to determine the center’s strategy for overall organizational growth.

Darla K. Deardorff

Darla K. Deardorff, EdD, teaches cross-cultural courses at Duke University, Middlebury Institute of International Studies and the Summer Institute of Intercultural Communication. She has been a visiting professor at North Carolina State University, the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, Shanghai International Studies University, and at Harvard's Future of Learning Institute. She is also executive director of the Association of International Education Administrators, a national professional organization based at Duke. She has conducted cross-cultural training for universities, companies, and nonprofit organizations for the past 20 years and has given talks and workshops by invitation at national and international conferences, including recent engagements in Slovenia, S. Africa, and China. Her intercultural competence models are used worldwide in a variety of institutions and programs. In addition, she has published numerous articles and book chapters on intercultural competence and assessment. She is editor of the “Sage Handbook of Intercultural Competence,” featuring leading intercultural scholars from around the world, co-editor with Hans de Wit of the “Sage Handbook of International Higher Education,” along with four other books.
