Strengthening Connections with Families to Expand Student Learning Abroad

Family involvement in students’ lives is increasing, yet many education abroad offices lack programming to engage families in the process. This session explores strategies to enhance parent partnerships that capitalize on families’ desires to be involved and strengthen student learning abroad.

Paige E. Butler

Assistant Professor
Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey

Dr. Butler is an Assistant Professor at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey (CA) in the masters degree program for International Education Management. She trains rising professionals for international education administration roles, teaching courses such as Program Design and Assessment, Education Abroad Management, Budgeting, and Student Development Theory. Paige also teaches Onsite Perspectives of Education Abroad Management in Madrid, Spain. Previously, Paige was the Director of Academic Affairs for an education abroad provider organization, where she was responsible for the academic operations of study abroad programs in nine locations world-wide. Prior to this, Paige held positions as an instructor and administrator at Arizona State University, working in study abroad, student development, first-year programs, and academic affairs. Butler earned her EdD in Educational Policy and Leadership Studies in Higher Education at Arizona State University. Her research interests largely center around student development and education abroad. Current projects include research around cultural transitions in education abroad, undocumented student experiences in education abroad, and exploring identities of international education practitioners. Butler is a Forum on Education Abroad Certified Education Abroad Professional, and serves as a Quality Improvement Plan reviewer. Additionally, Paige serves as a trainer for Forum Standards of Good Practice in Education Abroad and is part of the NAFSA Trainer Corps for the Management Development Program.

Sara Troy

Director of Program Development
CEA Study Abroad

Sara Troy is Director of Program Development at CEA Study Abroad. Sara’s role at CEA is to lead and manage the program development team, which focuses on creating programs that meet the needs of all students. She works closely with both CEA's international staff, and faculty & staff from U.S. universities to develop and deliver strong, acdemically sound programs. Sara has extensive experience in other student-related areas such as academic advising, international student advising, university housing, and program management at both large public and small private liberal arts colleges. Sara studied abroad in Rennes, France through ISEP her junior year of college.
