The Impact of Postgraduation Migration Prospects on Institution Enrollment Strategies

This session explores how postgraduation employment and immigration prospects affect institutional strategies to attract international students to countries that are facing demographic challenges and labor shortages. This multinational panel examines the motivations of prospective students and analyzes immigration data for Canada, the United States, and Europe.

Timothy Owen

Timothy Owen is the Deputy Executive Director of WES, and the Director of WES-Canada, the recognized international credential evaluation service of the government of Ontario. He has more than 25 years experience in the fields of international education and migration.

Tim has long history working on immigrant settlement, and credential recognition issues, and a career in the not for profit sector that spans forty years. Prior to joining WES, Tim was the associate executive director of COSTI, one of Canada’s leading immigrant service organizations. Tim has also worked for the International Council for Adult Education and the Canadian Organization for Development Through Education.

Tim currently serves on several advisory groups and committees related to immigrant integration. He plays a continuing role in the International Metropolis Project, which provides research and policy input on international migration issues, and is a frequent speaker on issues related to immigration and foreign credential recognition.Tim holds a bachelor’s degree in philosophy from Trent University, and a master’s degree in education from the University of Toronto.

Wendy Luther, President & CEO, EduNova – Wendy joined the EduNova team as President & CEO in October 2012. EduNova is a co-operative association of public and private-sector education providers in Nova Scotia committed to promoting Nova Scotia’s knowledge economy internationally. By attracting international students to study in Nova Scotia and by exporting Nova Scotia’s expertise globally, EduNova helps raise the profile of Nova Scotia training and expertise worldwide.

Prior to joining EduNova, Wendy was a Trade Development Executive with Nova Scotia Business Inc. since 2005. She led the charge to help service sector companies and education and training organizations close deals in export markets. Through her role as Nova Scotia’s first Private Sector Liaison Officer (PSLO) with the World Bank and Inter-American Development Bank, Wendy worked to connect entrepreneurs and institutions to opportunities funded by the International Financial Institutions.

Bringing a vast international network to the table, this executive is at the ready when it comes to linking companies with contacts on any continent. Wendy’s tip for tapping into new markets is to do business in person - advice which she takes to heart. Wendy has worked in over 20 countries with a current focus on the Caribbean, the Gulf Region and Washington DC.

Born in Vancouver, Wendy graduated with an undergraduate degree in psychology from the University of British Columbia and worked in the advertising industry before moving to Halifax in 2001.

In Halifax, Wendy joined the Atlantic Canada World Trade Centre as their Trade Consultant, where she achieved her Certified International Trade Professional designation. Since that time Wendy has continued her education, graduating with an Executive MBA from Saint Mary’s University in 2008 and is an alumnus of the Caribbean Canada Emerging Leaders Dialogue, 2011.

Nannette Ripmeester

Expertise in Labour Mobility

Nannette Ripmeester is director of Expertise in Labour Mobility (ELM). She is passionate about customizing solutions for international labour mobility. Nannette holds extensive knowledge on what makes graduates internationally employable through assignments for large corporate clients and higher education institutions across the globe. She is considered an expert on global mobility trends, is regularly invited to speak at international conferences (EAIE, DAAD, NAFSA, AIEC, WES, OECD), is part of the NAFSA Trainer Corps and has written extensively on international job-hunting practices. With her double-sided knowledge on what makes people mobile, Nannette advises HigherEd institutions and national & regional governments how to further increase the connection between recent graduates and their future job opportunities.
She combines her work for ELM with her role as Director Client Services Europe for i-graduate – a leading benchmarking organisation responsible for the International Student Barometer (ISB) and is founder of the HigherEd gamification app
With over 25 years of advising employers, universities and governments on graduate mobility, Nannette Ripmeester is one of Europe's leading experts on mobility for study and work. She is recently appointed Industry Innovator in Residence for Study Queensland with a focus on employability.
