Reach Around the Globe: Connecting Classrooms with Technology

This session presents three institutional case studies on how technology can expand global learning. The presenters discuss the benefits and challenges of their initiatives and share best practices for implementing virtual exchange. Participants will describe how they incorporated technology-based international education initiatives on their campuses.

Jami Leibowitz

Associate Director, Global Affairs
East Carolina University

Jami Leibowitz is the Associate Director of Global Affairs and Director of Global Academic Initiatives (GAI) at East Carolina University (ECU). In this position, she leads Global Virtual Exchange efforts on campus. Dr. Leibowitz’s primary responsibilities include working with ECU faculty and staff to promote, help develop and support global activities as well as lead and manage Global Partners in Education, a consortium of approximately 45 international partner institutions in 25 countries that actively participate in GAI activities each semester. Dr. Leibowitz received her Ph.D. in Anthropology from the University of Connecticut in 2003 and was faculty in the Department of Anthropology at East Carolina University from 2002 until 2013 when she left the department to take on a full time administrative position within Global Academic Initiatives. She is also a Fulbright alumnus who spent a year living and conducting research on reproductive health in Romania.

Natalia Dyba

Director, Global Initiatives
University of Washington-Bothell

Natalia Dyba is the Director of Global Initiatives at the University of Washington Bothell, a UW campus recognized for its interdisciplinary academic programs, diverse student population and entrepreneurial spirit. She oversees the growth of international efforts across campus, including education abroad, internationalizing the curriculum, institutional partnerships, and opportunities for global involvement locally. One of the main efforts she is spearheading is the UW COIL Initiative to embed online collaboration projects with partners abroad into existing courses.

Darin Smith-Gaddis

Regional Manager of Institutional Relations, Equity and Inclusion Initiatives
CAPA The Global Education Network

Darin Smith-Gaddis has spent 10 years in international education, focused on education abroad programs. From 2008-2014 he worked with AFS-USA, initially based in New York, serving as a program specialist for their Public Diplomacy Initiatives, as well as the Faces of America program. At CAPA The Global Education Network Darin is responsible for overseeing a team of institutional managers and the organizations equity and inclusion initiatives. Darin has presented on issues of diversity and inclusion in study abroad at NAFSA, Diversity Abroad, and other organizations. He holds a BA from Northwestern University and an MPA from California State University Northridge.
