Scenario Planning for the Future: Predicting the Role of the Senior International Officer

This session critically examines interpretations of major theorists that then frame a future scenario planning session for participants. Participants will identify the forces and trends affecting internationalization today, project how they might play out in the future, and ultimately in their role as the senior international officer.

Jane Gatewood

Vice Provost for Global Engagement
University of Rochester

Jane Gatewood is the Vice Provost for Global Engagement at the University of Rochester (New York). She earned a bachelor’s degree from Emory University and a PhD from the University of Georgia. Her administrative experience includes developing complex bi- and multi-lateral international partnerships for research, educational mobility, and economic development, and she has spent the last fifteen years working at the intersection of business, higher education, and government & diplomatic relations.

She has been a Fulbright awardee (India) and an Andrew W. Mellon Fellow at the School of Advanced Study (University of London). She was a visiting research editor for the Oxford English Dictionary (3rd Edition, Oxford University Press). Her academic training and expertise are in modern literary history, lexicography, and corpus linguistics. She regularly consults and speaks on the importance of partnerships to international higher education.

Dr. Melanie Agnew currently serves in the position of Dean, School of Education, Westminster College in Salt Lake City, Utah. Dr. Agnew has presented and published internationally in areas of internationalization of education, global learning, intercultural education, organizational development and change, university culture, and higher education leadership. She received her Ed. D. in Higher Education Leadership from the University of Calgary, Alberta, Canada and her master’s degree in Administrative Leadership in Adult Education from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

Moreen Travis Carvan

Director, Institutional Effectiveness
Marian University of Wisconsin

Dr. Moreen Carvan is Marian University’s Director of Institutional Effectiveness. She earned her BS in Secondary Education at the University of Texas at El Paso (1982), her MS in Curriculum and Instruction at Texas A&M University (1993), and her research-focused Ed.D. in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Cincinnati (1999). In the course of her career, Dr. Carvan has been a science teacher on the US-Mexico border, has worked in two state departments of education (Ohio and Wisconsin), and has served on the faculty of the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, the University of Rhode Island, and Marian University. From 2010 to the present, Dr. Carvan serves as an administrator in academic affairs, first at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside and currently at Marian University. Dr, Carvan’s master’s thesis was awarded the National Association for Research in Science Teaching Master’s Thesis Award for 1994; her doctoral research informed policy regarding systemic change initiatives of the National Science Foundation. She has testified before the National Academies of Science as an expert in assessment in higher education, and presented at the annual conferences of the American Education Research Association, the International Council for Education for Teaching, the National Association for Research in Science Teaching, and the American Association of Colleges of Teacher Education. She is currently serving as a Peer Reviewer for the Higher Learning Commission, and on the conference committee of the Association for the Assessment of Learning in Higher Education.

Sebrina C. Palmer

Planning Officer
The University of the West Indies, Mona

Sebrina Palmer is a Planning Officer at The University of the West Indies, Mona Campus and she has also served as adjunct lecturer at Shortwood Teachers’ Colleges in Jamaica. She is a trained educator who graduated from the Shortwood Teachers’ College with a diploma in teacher education and a B.Ed. from The University of the West Indies, Mona Campus where she also completed a Masters of Arts degree in Higher Education and an internship at Florida State University. Sebrina is currently enrolled as an MPhil PhD track student focusing on national and institutional policies and practices that guide programme and service designs for accommodating international students in Jamaican higher education institutions and the role of SIO.

Sebrina has presented at local seminars and regional and international conference which support her research interest. Most recently, she has presented as part of a panel at the International Council on Education for Teaching (ICET) in Jamaica on July 20, 2016. The title of the presentation was Internationalisation: Teacher preparation for building sustainable societies with an emphasis on comparative analysis of teacher education models in Jamaica and the USA and scenario planning for internationalizing teacher education for building sustainable societies and MENASA NASPA in Dubai on April 6, 2016 which focused on leadership student development programmes in higher education institutions.
