Using Intercultural Theory to Prevent Miscommunication in International Recruitment

As an international recruiter, there are occasionally moments of cultural misunderstanding. This session provides an overview of cultural theory through examples of “culture gone wrong” moments in international recruitment, and gives participants the tools to learn from others’ experiences to prevent miscommunication abroad.

Sarah Gonzales is Director of Graduate Programs at the University of Nevada Las Vegas, William S. Boyd School of Law. At UNLV she is in charge of recruitment, marketing and admissions for non-JD programs including the LLM in Gaming Law. She was previously Assistant Director, and Director of Recruitment and Marketing at the Straus Institute for Dispute Resolution at Pepperdine University School of Law. Ms. Gonzales lived abroad for 15 years in China, Taiwan, Philippines, Columbia and Ecuador prior to settling in the US. In addition to her work in higher education, Gonzales serves the NAFSA: Association for International Educators on their Trainer Corp team teaching Intercultural Communication in Practice, Admissions and Placement of International Students, and Assessment and Evaluation for International Educators. She has also taught Cross Cultural Negotiation and Conflict Management at Pepperdine Law for five years prior to joining UNLV, and is Coordinator of the Research Network for Families in Global Transition, a cross-cultural education and training organization for expats.

Joëlle Nisolle joined La Rochelle International Business School in France as an Associate Research Professor in 2007 to develop international cooperation agreements and to teach cross-cultural management, international negotiations, and international marketing courses. She was in charge of International Development and foreign student recruitment in Sub-Saharan Africa, the Americas and in India until she resigned late 2018. She held visiting professor positions at Paris Dauphine and Paris Créteil Universities in France for several decades. Expatriated since 1983 to the United States by Maisons Phenix Corporation to lead their international joint-venture with U.S. Homes, she joined the academic world in 1989 as a faculty member after receiving a Fulbright grant to complete a PhD in applied anthropology. She taught in several U.S. state universities in Florida, New Mexico, Kansas, and Texas. She was a frequent invited professor in France, Germany, Slovenia, Russia, Turkey, Tajikistan, Pakistan, Gabon, Cameroon, Ivory Coast.and Bahrain. Her research interests are cultural analysis, cross-cultural management, women' s entrepreneurship, and transitional economies (particularly Central Asia and Russia). She also holds a French Doctorate in Marketing and a Degree from the Institute of Political Studies in Paris. Before starting her academic career, she worked for real estate corporations in Europe and in the United States. She is fluent in French and English and understands some Russian, Spanish, and German.
