How Institutions are Implementing SEVP’s Guidance on Bridge and Pathways Programs

Bridge and pathway programs have become integral tools of recruitment and academic preparation for students. This past year, SEVP published final policy guidance to address several important components of these programs, including ESL pathway programs, conditional admission, and use of the English proficiency fields on Form I-20. This session explores the guidance and opens a discussion on how it affects bridge and pathway programs at institutions.

Amber Tetreau-Segura

Associate Director of Admissions, Immigration & Student Services
University of Arizona CESL

Amber Tetreau-Segura is the Associate Director of Admissions, Immigration, and Student Services at the Center for English as a Second Language (CESL) at the University of Arizona. Tetreau-Segura has been working with international students and scholars for more than a decade. She is currently the PDSO for CESL and serves as the liaison with sponsoring agencies and oversees admissions and student services for all CESL programs. Tetreau-Segura holds an MA in higher education with a concentration in international and comparative education from the University of Arizona and a BA in Spanish from Northern Arizona University. Tetreau-Segura currently serves on the International Student Subcommittee within NAFSA’s International Student and Scholar Regulatory Practice committee.

Nicholas M. Ferdinandt

Associate Director
University of Arizona Center for English as a Second Language

Nicholas Ferdinandt serves at the University of Arizona as the Director of the University Track ESL Bridge Programs, as the Associate Director at the University’s Center for ESL, and as the Director of the Critical Languages Program. As founding director of the Center’s ESL Bridge Program, Nick created and established the program which is also accredited through CEA. As an Associate Professor in the Center for the Applied and Public Humanities, Nick teaches a language program evaluation course and an intercultural competence course. He holds an Ed.D. in Educational Leadership from the University of St. Thomas in Minnesota, and an M.A. in Slavic Languages and Literatures from The Ohio State University.

Mihaela Metianu

Director of International Student and Scholar Services
Florida Atlantic University

Mihaela Metianu is the director of International Services at Florida Atlantic University. She has been working in the field of international higher education since 1996 and serves as the PDSO (Principal Designated School Official) and RO (Responsible Officer) for her institution. She is an active NAFSA member who served as a Trainer Corps workshop facilitator and session/webinar presenter. Currently she serves on the ISS Regulatory Practice Committee as the Chair of the Student Subcommittee.
