Focus on First-Years: Incentivizing and Integrating Education Abroad

First-year students are often an overlooked population in education abroad. Two different U.S. institutions share case studies of their innovative initiatives to engage this group. Through discussions and interactive technology, participants gain ideas for capitalizing on first-year student interest in study abroad on their own campuses.

Elaine Meyer-Lee

Associate Vice President for Global Learning and Leadership Development
Agnes Scott College

Dr. Elaine Meyer-Lee is Associate Vice President for Global Learning and Leadership Development at Agnes Scott College, heading up an innovative curriculum and co-curriculum that prepares every student to lead effectively in a global society. For 13 years before that, she was the Senior International Officer at Saint Mary’s College. Her doctorate in human development and psychology is from Harvard University, where she began her studies of college student development around issues of difference and the effects of intercultural education. Besides teaching, she has conducted major research projects at the Harvard/Facing History Project, Boston College, Yale, Cambridge College, Saint Mary’s and now at Agnes Scott.

Dr. Meyer-Lee has given numerous invited talks, consultations, and juried presentations nationally and internationally on assessment and leadership, published articles and chapters, received grants and awards including a Fulbright Scholarship, and has recently concluded her term as President and Chair of NAFSA's Board of Directors, as well as holding other national leadership positions.

Jennifer Evanuik Baird

Director, Global Internship Program and International Plan
Georgia Institute of Technology Office of International Education

Jennifer Evanuik Baird is currently the Director of the Global Internship Program and the International Plan at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, GA. She is also a member of NAFSA's WIVRA subcommittee and TrainerCorps. Over her career, Jennifer has managed many aspects of education abroad, including overseas internships, academic exchange programs, and integrating global education into the curriculum (particularly in the STEM fields), and frequently collaborates with colleagues in International Student & Scholar Services. She is also an experienced facilitator of intercultural communication training workshops and has taught courses on intercultural communication and doing business in other cultures. Jennifer holds a B.S. in French and International Business from the Pennsylvania State University and an M.Ed. in Social and Comparative Analysis in Education from the University of Pittsburgh.

Lorie J. Paulez

Director of Education Abroad
Georgia Institute of Technology Office of International Education

Lorie Johns Páulez is the Director of Education Abroad at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, Georgia. She has worked in international education since 2000 for organizations and institutions in the US and in Spain. She holds a Master of Arts degree from New York University in Spanish Literature. Her experience includes education abroad policies and procedures, sending STEM students abroad, program development, recruitment and marketing, on-site program management, education abroad advising, health and safety, management of the education abroad office, campus programming, and intercultural communication training. Lorie has presented sessions and workshops at regional, national, and international conferences, and has served in various advisory roles related to sending students overseas. She is currently a member of NAFSA Trainer Corps and previously served on the EAKC Subcommittee for Diversity & Inclusion in Education Abroad.

Janelle S. Peifer

Assistant Professor
Agnes Scott College

Janelle S. Peifer is an assistant professor of psychology at Agnes Scott College. She earned her Ph.D. in Clinical and School Psychology at the University of Virginia and is an alumna of Wake Forest University. Her research examines intra- and inter-cultural processes of college students’ global competence development. Peifer’s clinical and applied interests include emerging adult’s identity formation, trauma/resilience, and the impact of travel-based experiences on young women’s leadership development.
