Branding and Marketing Study Abroad on Campus - (WS34)

The goal of this workshop is to provide participants with information and tools to brand or rebrand study abroad on their campus. Discuss the importance of branding, and discovering or defining an office or program identity. Staffing, resources for branding, working with university marketing policies, and case studies from the panel are covered.

Trevor Nelson

Iowa State University Study Abroad Center

Trevor has worked in education abroad for 30 years heading up study abroad offices at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville and Iowa State University (ISU). Currently, he is the Director of the Study Abroad Center at ISU, an institution sending approximately 1700 students annually to participate in credit bearing education abroad programs.

While he has made numerous presentations at regional and national conferences, they have most recently focused on marketing and branding education abroad opportunities on campus. Workshops on these topics have been offered at regional and national conferences.

Rebecca Lubitz-Marchena

Content Marketing Specialist
University of California-Berkeley Extension

Rebecca Lubitz-Marchena currently works shaping content marketing strategy for UC Berkeley Extension's international and continuing education programs. She has more than a decade of experience living and working in international education settings including seven years managing marketing and outreach efforts at at Child Famliy Health International (CFHI), a global health internship provider, and as an English instructor in rural Brazil. She is currently working towards her master's in International Education at SIT Graduate Institute, has a Certificate in Marketing from UC Berkeley Extension and a B.A. from the University of Maryland, College Park in Anthropology and Latin American Literature. Rebecca has traveled extensively throughout Latin America, Europe, and the Middle East and is fluent in Spanish and Portuguese.

Brad Stepan

Director, North American Office
DIS Study Abroad in Scandinavia

Brad Stepan has been with DIS- Study Abroad in Scandinavia for over 20 years in various positions and is currently the Director of North American Operations for DIS, based in Minneapolis. In this position, he leads four teams: Marketing and Communications, Institutional Relations, Enrollment Services, and Operations. His teams are reasonsible for building enrollment of over 3000 annually across over 25 academic semester and summer programs through print/digital marketing, branding, institutional relations, student recruiting and campus relations. His enrollment services team admits, registers, advises, and prepares students to study abroad with DIS in Copenhagen and Stockholm.

Ben McKelfresh

Marketing and Program Coordinator
Iowa State University Study Abroad Center

Ben McKelfresh is a Marketing & Program Coordinator at Iowa State University's Study Abroad Center, where he manages all Center marketing efforts including web, print, events, etc. and oversees a suite of study abroad programs in Germany, Ireland, Scandinavia, and the UK. Prior to joining Iowa State, Ben worked at the North American Office for DIS: Study Abroad in Scandinavia where he recruited US college and university students to participate in DIS programs and served on the Enrollment Services Team, advising students prior to their departure for Scandinavia. His decade-long career in international education started with an internship in Copenhagen for DIS and serving as a Study Abroad Advisor at Kansas State University. He holds a B.A. from DePauw University (Indiana) in German and a M.A. from the University of Minnesota in Comparative and International Development Education. In college, Ben studied abroad in Denmark & Germany, and has since traveled to roughly 30 countries on 5 continents. He calls Des Moines, Iowa home and lives there with his wife and son.
