As institutions grapple with managing higher expectations for global experiences, the impact on international offices to support this change is immense and often left unaddressed. Presenters discuss the importance of considering organizational structure and development, and embracing office and programmatic reviews as core values and strategies.

Nigel Cossar

Director, Penn Abroad and Global Programs
University of Pennsylvania

Nigel Cossar leads Penn Abroad, the department overseeing education abroad programs and policy at the University of Pennsylvania. He has worked in education abroad for 16 years, in institutions and not-for-profit organizations both in Australia and the US. Nigel has held previous leadership positions in various international education bodies including the International Education Association of Australia (IEAA), Forum on Education Abroad, and NAFSA, in addition to serving on numerous boards including currently the Consortium for the Advanced Studies Abroad (CASA) and the CIEE Academic Consortium Board. Nigel is responsible for establishing areas of mutual engagement with key bodies and partners internationally for Penn and leads the campus community global student programming. He has presented at numerous education abroad conferences including ACAD, AIEC, APAIE, NAFSA, EAIE and the Forum, and was the Local Arrangements Team Co-Chair at NAFSA 2018 in Philadelphia.

Joël A. Gallegos

Assistant Provost for International Programs
University of North Carolina-Charlotte Office of International Programs

Joël A. Gallegos is assistant provost for international programs at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte (UNC Charlotte) where he overseas campus wide internationalization efforts including education abroad, international students and scholars, English language training, global engagement, intercultural outreach and on campus internationalization. Previously, he served as director of education abroad at UNC Charlotte and as director of study abroad at the University of Toledo.

Gallegos, who was chair of NAFSA's 2014 Annual Conference in San Diego also serves on their board of directors while chairing the institutional advancement committee. He also currently serves on the board of directors of the Fund for Education Abroad (FEA) and the World Affairs Council of Charlotte where he chairs the education committee. He served as a member of the Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE) board of directors and as chair of CIEE's Academic Consortium Board from 2012-2014. From 2007-2012, Gallegos served as chair of UNC System's University Council on International Programs and chair of the UNC Exchange Program advisory board. Gallegos was the 2008 recipient of NAFSA's Lilly von Klemperer award.

Martha Johnson

Assistant Dean, Learning Abroad
University of Minnesota-Twin Cities

Dr Martha Johnson is the Assistant Dean for Learning Abroad at the University of Minnesota and oversees one of the largest education abroad offices in the US, currently sending over 4000 students abroad annually. She has worked in international education since 1991 for organizations and institutions in the US, Ireland, and the United Kingdom. Her experience includes on-site program management, teaching of short-term programs, program development and marketing, and management of a large university education abroad office. Martha has presented on numerous sessions and workshops at national and international conferences, consults with universities internationally, served in a variety of leadership positions in NAFSA and the Forum on Education Abroad, and authored numerous articles and publication chapters on topics relating to international education.
